Product Description

An ingenious and brilliantly realised historical novel by a million-selling author writing with a different voice, but the same trusty keyboard. Tread Softly tells the story behind the cloak Sir Walter Raleigh famously sacrificed to protect the shoes of his Queen. Mary Devereux and her father, John, have been appointed to embroider a precious cloak for Walter Raleigh, ready for an invitation to Queen Elizabeth I's court. Each stitch carries Mary's dreams and longings as she gets to know the world of high society. Silently she observes gossip, ambition, dark secrets and high vanity and - on one fateful day - murder. Now Mary is being watched - a dangerous traitor suspects she knows more than she should...

From the Publisher

This novel reveals the extraordinary court of the Tudors through the eyes of the protagonist, the young seamstress who made the cloak. It contains all the ingredients for a great historical read for modern readers; a compelling heroine, thoroughly researched action and adventure and a sympathetic and accessible tone.

An original angle on the Elizabethan period - the story behind the cloak Raleigh lay down over the puddle - in the tradition of 'The Girl with the Pearl Earring'.

A fresh and exciting stand-alone novel written by a million-selling author.

This was a most enjoyable read, but took a little time to get off the ground. I found the dialogue between the characters initially a little hard going and clumsy, but eventually the story came into its own.

This is the tale of a seamstress who ups her station in life - first by creating a cloak 'fit for a Queen' that takes her to the palace itself. Here she becomes a member of the court, and has close encounters with Elizabeth I. Despite her climb of the ladder of life, she opts to return to her humble beginnings.

One is inclined at the outset to interpret this as a possible romance novel, but as it progresses, it becomes much more than that. This has mystery, intrigue, adventure, murder and excitement, and is not overly sentimental.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it highly.

Format:Paperback
I love historical fiction, and couldn't resist this book when my daughter chose it last Christmas.

I really enjoyed it. The pace is fast, it's well written and the characters are great.

Although it is based around the well known figure of (Sir) Walter Raleigh, it is written from the point of view of the young seamstress who he employs to make the fine cloak that famously prevented Queen Elizabeth I from soiling her shoes in a puddle.

The Queen has many enemies and it is hard to know who is friend and who is foe. Employed now as one of the Queen's seamstresses, Mary must decide who she can trust with dangerous information that she has overheard.

The rest you must read for yourself, you'll be glad you did.
