5.0 out of 5 stars Callas improved from Original Tapes 25 Sep 2011
Format:Audio CD
EMI's Callas Lisbon 1958 La Traviata is Awful!

The performance is excellent (of course) but the transfer is one of the poorest that gramophone history has ever saw! Back in 1997 EMI has remastered the tapes and awfully re-equalized the performance, reminding us a sonically poor 1958 radio broadcast show.

The Great news are that this EXACTLY same performance is now back to the catalogue using the original master tapes owned by RDP - Radiodifusão Portuguesa, Portuguese Radio - which originally has broadcasted the show. The differences between "EMI" and "Myto" are ABSOLUTELY HUGE! This release made by Myto using those tapes, makes you wonder if the performance was recorded in mono or stereo! I have both releases, and despite the booklet included in EMI edition, the Myto Edition is far superior.

All in sum: EMI's sounds like a bad recording broadcasted back in 1958. The "Myto" edition sounds like you're listening to the original mono (sometimes seems like stereo!) master tapes made in 1958.

Just Buy it! Specially if you already have the EMI edition!
I bought the EMI edition for the excellent booklet notes and replaced the CDs for the ones released by Myto.

4.0 out of 5 stars The 'best' Lisbon TRAVIATA 15 Jun 2009
Format:Audio CD
This 1958 TRAVIATA being too well known to require a new review, I will only alert other Amazon customers that it comes from a source different from that of EMI's inferior tapes. This Myto release has the same superior sonic quality as the Pearl issue (perhaps the same source), though far less expensive than the latter. The only reason I've deducted a star is that, annoyingly enough, the prompter's constant groaning is more ubiquitous here than on EMI. If you don't own a Callas Violetta, this is the recording to have, though I still prefer her 1955 La Scala performance on account of Bastianini's Germont and di Stefano's Alfredo. Let's hope a better source of the Milan recording than the EMI (acceptable sound) surfaces soon.

Wonderful re-working of a recording of a great historical performance. Any lover of Maria Callas must have this, plus it is the debut of Alfredo Kraus
