Product Description

The author and her husband devised a simple plan – to take a tent and the dog and drive around the perimeter of France. Like many simple plans it went wrong before it started and they ended up with two dogs and a campervan named Tinkerbelle.

Starting in Brittany, they motorhome along the Atlantic Coast south to the Pyrenees, then follow the Mediterranean resorts to the Alps before juddering off towards the north coast across terrifyingly high mountain causeways. But on the second day of their journey Tinkerbelle begins to self-destruct, helped by the new dog who does his best to eat her from the inside out. This is their story, as they travel from sandy beaches to snow-topped mountains exploring the diverse cultures, cuisines and countryside making up the country called France. Their journey takes them to places out of the ordinary, meeting interesting characters and witnessing ancient traditions. While the dogs rejoice in the freedom they find running on the beaches, Susie and Terry spend a lot of time holding their breath, wondering whether their clapped out old campervan called Tinkerbelle will manage to negotiate impossible mountain routes and get them home before she completely disintegrates.

‘There are a handful of authors that will achieve that elusive trick of making you laugh out loud. For me it's James Herriot, Bill Bryson & Susie Kelly.’ French Entree Magazine June 2013

‘Wow, what a road trip. The chaos that is Tinkerbelle with two adults and two large dogs, one still a puppy who delights in eating non-edibles, makes for some very funny tales to read.’ French Village Diaries

‘One of the best holiday reads this year. Travelogue with a difference...’ Az US

‘Its not often that you find a book that is both entertaining and extremely informative at the same time.’ Az US

‘I felt like I was right there in Tinkerbelle with them all. I could almost smell wet dog. I hope Susie and her husband have many more adventures and let me tag along via her next great book. Keep them coming Susie!’ Az US

‘I just love reading Susie's books. Her travel books contain loads of helpful information, plenty of humor and often the odd tear. I even slowed down my usual reading pace to try and make it last longer. Download it, read it and enjoy it.’ Az US

Travels with Tinkerbelle is a personal story sprinkled with humor but also a France guidebook full of history and practical information. Dog lovers who enjoy dog humor, France lovers who enjoy travel humor, and fans of travel writing of the highest calibre, like Bill Bryson, Tim Moore and Peter Mayle, will love this book.

Enhanced features include links to more information about the most significant places visited on the trip and an accompanying online photo album.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Adventure 17 Sep 2012
By DoubleK
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a tale of a trip around France, 6000 miles in six weeks is a bit of a rush and some parts of the tale were short on detail but a very good tale which could probably provide material for a sequel, if so I would buy a copy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another triumph 11 May 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I just love reading Susie's books. Her travel books contain loads of helpful information, plenty of humour and often the odd tear.
After reading The Valley of Heaven and Hell I urged the author to use a car for the next one as biking across France had worn me out and I was only doing it in my mind with the book.
Nothing so mundane as a car this time but a mighty dodgy campervan. At least I'm not so exhausted this time.
Having had a home on wheels years ago it brought back memories of narrow roads, low obstacles and the like. Taking a trip around the perimeter of France is bound to cover some places you have been so there's a lovely familiarity about it as you go along. But despite having been to a large proportion of the country I was constantly visiting new towns, villages or sites.
Susie manages to pack in so many snippets of information, history or just their experience of the moment. Much as I am an avid fan even I never thought that elephants would get a good mention without a zoo in sight. Little gems like that make you feel the author is sitting beside you like a chat in the pub.
I even slowed down my usual reading pace to try and make it last longer. I shall now start all over again this time with a road atlas to hand and a felt tip pen to mark the places for a future visit.
Download it, read it and enjoy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful story 16 Jan 2014
By Rosie
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I understand how Susie feels, I love France and have had a house in the south of France for 10 years and hope to live here with my hubby for most of the year rather than the 3 or 4 months we do now. We also have two dogs who go with us everywhere and I have had horses all my life until very recently. Her story was written as she and Terry drove round France visiting all the areas and seeing for themselves how many different parts France has. I loved the individual stories when she visited places with history or funny detail, often described with a dry sense of humour!

I am in France at the moment, but just for a week and we have followed her journey to Arles and Lodeve and looked for the areas she mentioned. I loved this book with its quirky comments, historical and geographical facts and lots and lots of humour. I cannot wait to read more of her books.

I do hope Tinkerbelle is ok after her journey and I loved the final sentence when she said that both dogs sat beside Tinkerbelle for a week - how fab, I love them!

5.0 out of 5 stars brilliant read 30 Dec 2013

I loved this, not only for the whole story but the historical aspects of each town they visited that the writer took time to talk about. I have visited many of the places she mentions, so it was even more meaningful.

4.0 out of 5 stars a well written book as always 18 Nov 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Ive read most of Susies books about travel and enjoyed them all. I did feel it was a bit rushed to to do the whole of France in just a few weeks but it worked.. I laughed out loud a few times and wiped away the tears at others.. Some of the antics they got upto on the campsites were very funny... as were some of the characters who we met along the way. A nice easy pleasant book to read.
