I'd been meaning to read this for years, having enjoyed many holidays in the Cevennes. It's a fascinating record of RLS's travels through villages and countryside that seem to have changed very little in more than a century. The characters that he meets (or their descendants!) are still living in these villages today.

Stumbled across this by accident, and although I enjoy Robert Louis Stevenson's books, like most people I had stuck to Treasure Island and Kidnapped. This however, was a well written, interesting book and made me see him in a new light. Well worth a read.

A long lost gem of a book. Having read another travel book about the Pyrenees that had made reference to this book I decided to read it myself. What a delight! Of course the author is well known, but not for his travel writing. I laughed out loud at his descriptions of loading his donkey and subsequent incidents with it. He provides us with insights to people's prejudices as well, which are still just as valid today as when this was written. Try it for yourself.
