Product Description

Have you been backpacking with your daughter in India? Been ripped off at the Zimbabwe border - or anywhere? Inadvertently become a hatchery for the African Putse-fly - with only a jar of Vaseline and a steady hand between you and blood poisoning?

Kate Nivison caught the travel bug (sometimes too literally) whilst working in Africa, and raising a family there. She finds that a ‘keep calm and carry on’ approach helps when things go pineapple-shaped.

Kate reveals the fun and bumpy bits of travelling. She has also created some inspiring short stories to brighten your journeys or have you reaching for your passport, whether you are a born escapist or an armchair traveller.

5.0 out of 5 stars Travelling Light 18 July 2011
By Norrie
Format:Paperback
Perfect holiday reading. The book is a mix of short stories and travel
pieces by an experienced journalist, so they're easy to read and sharply
observed. I loved "Nowhere Man", a funny and chilling update of the
Flying Dutchman idea, and the sting-in-the-tail romance of "In Perugia".
Nivison is clearly an adventurous traveller and writes vividly of the
discomforts as well as the delights of exotic places, so if you want to
experience a night in Lagos in possibly the worst B+B ever, or the glory
of a Himalayan sunrise, without stirring from your armchair, this is one
for you.

It also looks good and is light to carry around. Worth its place in
anyone's cabin baggage.

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining & Relaxing at the same time. Great! 26 May 2012
Format:Paperback
Kate Nivison is such an open, honest writer, something very unusual these days. This book is both a joy to read & a tranquilliser, meaning that in the most positive sense, in that you feel you are taken away from the madness of modern life. Her stories are funny, revealing and highly entertaining. Also well crafted and written. Certainly one to take on holiday, to add that something special on the beach! James Penhaligon, author of 'Speak Swahili, Dammit!'

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining Travelling 18 April 2012
Format:Paperback
"Travelling Light" by Kate Nivison is one of those books that I enjoy dipping into as the author is able to make her writing both interesting and entertaining. I appreciate being able to choose one story or several stories, according to how much reading time I have.
From the Fiction Section I particularly liked the off beat, "Flying South" and also the amusing and cautionary "Nowhere Man".
The separate Travel Writing Section gives insights into both modern travel in far-flung places and how past women travellers managed. "Agatha Christie's Other Career" gives a fascinating account of her other (travelling) life and the article on Victorian Mary Kingsley tells of her intrepid travels in Africa when she really did travel light but naturally took her pill-box fur hat!
I think my next read from the book will be "The Magic of a Balloon Safari". It sounds good.
