Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Travelling Light could hardly be described as a classical album, but it could be called Lesley Garrett's "coming out" album. Instead of trying to be all things to all men by combining classical arias with show-stoppers and pop and not doing complete justice to any (as she herself admits admirably in her own booklet notes), here she concentrates on one theme. The result is one of her most successful and enjoyable recordings to date. The canny variety of sources, moods and textures in the 14 songs is complemented by some imaginative arrangements and the presence of some of La Garrett's friends--Bryn Terfel on terrific form in "Bess, You is my woman now", Michael Ball giving a demonstration of how a theatre-trained singer sells a lyric in "The Summer Knows", and Evelyn Glennie (her contribution in "Mambo Italiano" is worth the price of the disc alone). Despite a misconceived "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" (where is the wistful innocence?) and an uncharacterised "Alabama Song" (I didn't believe she'd ever drunk anything stronger than lemonade), Garrett offers some really thrilling singing, not least in her superb version of "I Dreamed a Dream" from Les Misérables. Why does no one book her for a West End/Broadway show? --Jeremy Nicholas

5.0 out of 5 stars Another cracker from Britain's favourite soprano, 13 Nov 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Travelling Light (Audio CD)
Lesley Garrett proves once again that she is a versatile and talented musician who can turn her hand (voice?!) to many different styles. This combines material from favourites such as Les Miserables, Porgy & Bess and West Side Story; alongside new work - Tolga Kashif (Ave Maria and La Violet) Sir George Martin (Two Hearts, One Love) and some unusual arrangements of classic songs - Elvis (Surrender/The Wonder of You), The Beatles (For No One/Blackbird). On this album Lesley is joined by several different singers - Michel Legrand, Evelyn Glennie, Bryn Terfel, Michael Ball, Denyce Graves, The Metro Singers and the choir of Clare College, Cambridge as well as Evelyn Glennie and Roland Chadwick. It's varied, contrasting and very well arranged. Lesley Garrett's fans will love this as will those looking for something just a little bit different.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lesley Garrett - Tranquility, 14 Oct 2002
By
Grania Hyde-Smith (London United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Travelling Light (Audio CD)
Lesley Garrett’s latest offering is a collection of soothing and serene arias. Garrett has opted for a fairly commercial classical compilation but nevertheless, this album is produced to the highest quality and features some excellent performances from Garrett, accompanied by both the BBC Concert Orchestra and the Britten Sinfonia.

There is no doubt that Lesley Garrett is a wonderful singer. Throughout the collection, she produces some really tremendous singing whilst she weaves sweetly in and out of the rich melodies. The truly magical moments come in the shape of commercial favourites such as Schubert’s Ave Maria, Fauré’s Pie Jesu and in what is now widely considered Garrett’s signature tune, Caccini’s Ave Maria.

Other highlights include Handel’s Ombra Mai Fù and Bellini’s Cast a Diva.

This is a light, classic collection of beautiful songs, which would probably not suit the taste of a serious opera enthusiast but would certainly be a valuable addition to any CD collection. As the album title suggests, it is a relaxing and calming set of wonderful songs by the UK’s favourite soprano.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lesley Garrett - Travelling Light, 14 Dec 2008
This review is from: Traveling Light (Audio CD)
This is a great album! I was unsure what to expect, when I first bought it. I need not have worried, this is a well researched & well balanced album.

This project is the first musical collaboration between Lesley Garrett and composer/arranger Tolga Kashif, a musical partnership that is highly prized by Garrett. They have since worked together on all her subsequent solo albums. This album features two of Kashif's own compositions: "Ave Maria" & "La Violet".

Sir George Martin and Michel Le Grand also feature on the album. George Martin penned & conducts his own composition "Two Hearts, One Love", (especially written for Lesley); as well as arranging the Beatles Medley. Michel Le Grand also duets with Lesley on "Et Si Demain", and also conducts "The Summer Knows", where Lesley duets with Michael Ball. Lesley also duets with Denyce Graves, Evelyn Glennie & Bryn Terfel too .

My personal favourite tracks include: "Ave Maria"; "La Violet"; "The Alabama Song"; "Two Hearts, One Love"; "A Boy Like/I Have A Love"; "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" & "On Holy Ground".

This album has something for everyone. Superb arrangements, a varied selection of songs, and duets with some of the most famous names of the music world to date.

Lesley Garrett has always wanted to make a record like this. I think her enthusiasm for the project, shines through in her vocal performance. Making this a must have for all Lesley Garrett fans, as well as anyone seeking an introduction to Garrett's work.
