'Sheila Stewart is a natural storyteller' --English Dance and Song

You will love reading this book. Buy it! --Facts and Fiction

The event-packed autobiography of this acclaimed singer gives an insight into an almost vanished way of life --Scotland in Trust Magazine

Product Description

Sheila Stewart is the last in the line of the Stewarts o' Blair, a travelling family who have made a unique contribution to the musical and oral traditions of Scotland. Her mother was the legendary 'Queen amang the Heather', the singer and storyteller Belle Stewart, and her father, Willie Stewart, was a noted piper. Sheila spent her childhood wandering with them all over Scotland, working on farms and experiencing all the highs and lows of the traveller lifestyle. From 1954 she sang in concerts with her parents and her sister Cathie, and they became stars of the folk scene. An acclaimed storyteller and ballad singer, she is in huge demand and has continued to perform up to the present day. This, her long-awaited autobiography, is graphic in its depiction of the sometimes harrowing circumstances of her life, but is also a tribute to the rich and dramatic tradition of which she is one of the last representatives.

Fabulous Book 19 April 2011
By KathyH
Format:Paperback
Having read Sheila's previous book about her mother Belle "The Queen Amang the Heather" I have been waiting with bated breath to get her book about her own life as a traveller. It was well worth the wait. "A Traveller's Life: The Autobiography of Sheila Stewart" is a fabulous book, one minute shaking with laughter, the next wiping away the tears because of the injustices Sheila has had to face throughout her life because she is a traveller. It's a great read and I couldn't put it down. Sheila has a lovely writing style it's just like she's sitting telling you herself. I'm waiting for the next one! And if you think her book's good........you should hear her sing!

A Traveller's Life 18 April 2011
Format:Paperback
What a fantastic book this is, I just couldn't put it down and read it all in one night. One minute tears were running down my face with sadness the next I was laughing out loud. Sheila's Autobiography is an amazing mix of incidents from her life, and stories she has heard and it is truely written from the heart.

If you haven't read it yet, get a copy, make yourself a cup of tea and prepare for an evening of laughter and tears.

Well done Sheila and I can't wait to see what comes next.

Sheila Stewart as a singer, story teller and workshop leader has been an inspiration to me for a long time now. As someone who has lived through richly varied experiences; from being perceived as an outcast for her identity and heritage as a traveller to being revered internationally for being an outstanding performer and tradition bearer, she is surely a wise woman that we can learn much from listening too. If you have seen Sheila Stewart performing you will know what I am talking about. I'm really glad to have this book because it is a warm, personal and honest account of a significant life told in a direct conversational way that reads like she is thinking through what she's saying and speaking to you as you read. Brilliant.
