Travellers Calabria (Travellers - Thomas Cook)Calabria has not been treated well by modern travel guides, usually relegated to a few dismissive pages at the end of a guide to Italy. English guidebooks dedicated to the region have not been available and 'Travellers Calabria' fills the gap very well.
The guide is timely - Calabria has long been a high-season destination for north Italians attracted by the superb sandy beaches and good food, but the region is slowly realising its potential for visitors from further afield. The splendid national parks and the more commercialised west coast are well-covered by the guide but it is less generous towards the east coast. Here the towns may not be as attractive as their western rivals but the area has a slower pace of life with a charm of its own. Little known Calabrian gems are featured such as the Literary Parks, an imaginative revival of 'Grand Tour' tourism in the south, as well as many of the picturesque hill-top towns to be found in the area. The guide deals honestly with Calabria's mixed history and its modern problems, not least the darker side of southern Italy which is often ignored by travel guides. Public transport in Calabria has room for improvement and there is no mention of travel by bus - a Calabrian challenge with information on the ground hard to find. A note of the problems might persuade the authorities to make bus travel more accessible to visitors.
The book has excellent illustrations throughout, as well as maps and street plans of the larger towns with detailed walks through the historical areas. All in all an attractive and well-balanced guide to a region which deserves to be visited for all the right reasons - not least its friendly and welcoming people.
