Product Description

Traveling Man James Rumford, himself a world traveler, has retold Ibn Battuta's story in words and pictures, adding the element of ancient Arab maps--maps as colorful and evocative as a Persian miniature, as intricate and mysterious as a tiled Moroccan wall. Into this arabesque of pictures and maps is woven the story not just of a traveler in a world long gone but of a man on his journey through life. Full description

An absolutely outstanding piece of historical work that will light up any bookshelf and mind. With beautiful writing and paintings this book is an invaluable resource and must be shared with your children and friends-yes, its for any age group because the lines speak a thousand words. A must have in your collection to enrich young minds and incurr a sense of admiration for muslim figureS/characters which i am sad to say i find laking in childrens literature- no offence.

I found the book: Traveling Man - The Journey of Ibn Batutta, 1325-1354, by James Rumford to be very colourful with the smoothly written text which makes you want to read the story and the watercolours with Arabic Calligraphy gives it clarity and sharpness. Also, I found Rumford's use of ancient Arabic maps to outline the routes with commentaries - as an excellent example to engage and inspire children to use their imagination. My children found the book as an aid to help them to draw maps, sketches and logos. The book is not just for children and those adults who find text books a bit of a drag - then this book will re-kindle your imagination through paintings and maps that are not just woven into the story of Ibn Battuta's travels but about his journey through life in that 29 year period.

I would strongly recommend parents to purchase these types of books that engage children to learn in an informal way through just looking at pictures - with the option of reading nuggets of fascinating information from over 500 hundred years ago!

THis book is absolutely a work of fine art. the story is beautifully concieved and described and the illustrations are out of this world, with every page framed in beautiful calligraphy, original text from ibn batuta's journal, and authentic 14th century maps. Good for ages 3+ in my opinion. this is one they will appreciate more and more as they get older. also great for adults!

Outstanding book for learning about geography, medieval history, and also about Islamic n Africa. The illustrations are superb. We used this instead of Marco Polo books, as Ibn Battuta travelled further.
