In her new book Solange draws from years of experience, of both travelling and travel writing, to bring us this wonderful guide. If you are embarking on a travel writing career I couldn’t recommend it more highly.
It’s laid out in a format that’s easy to read and digest and it’s packed full of colourful anecdotes from Solange’s own experiences. Each chapter tackles a different aspect of travel writing from preparing for a trip, developing your observational skills, pitching to editors and setting the tone of your writing to match different markets and so much more besides.
One thing that did surprise me, however, was that she uses a compact camera to take photographs to illustrate her articles. Personally, I wouldn’t want to give up my control over depth of field and shutter speed that my DSLR gives me but that being said, Solange is an great photographer and I would never have guessed she was only using a compact.
Solange’s book is packed full of really essential tips and advice that any would be travel writer would do well to follow. I doubt you could find a better book to guide you through your travel writing journey, whether you are just setting out or some way along the road, this book is a must.

If you ever wanted to know all about travel writing, what it entails, how to write it, where to sell it, then this is the book for you.
I read it because the author had asked me for a quote about something totally unrelated to travel. I certainly had no intention of writing about travel when I opened the book but Solange Hando’s energy and enthusiasm for her subject shines through the pages. She makes you want to write about the destinations you’ve been to, whether they were halfway across the world or right on your own doorstep. And once she’s opened your eyes to this she tells you how to research your subject, how you are going to set it out, how you will write it and what photos to supply to go with it. You’ll learn how to approach editors and get more work. But, first of all, she stresses that you know which publication you are going to send your feature to – before you write a word. This was the real biggie for me. I had no idea there were so many openings available for travel writing. I shall definitely be trying some.

I was fortunate enough to read Solange's book before it went into production (I know her), which enabled me to write a review for her (which also appears on this page). But I wanted to add a review to this section because her book is packed full of tips - many in a bullet-pointed form, which makes it easy to digest (dare I say it, unlike some of your meals you may encounter when in foreign climes!).

Solange is one of those people who are out there doing it! She's a travel writing expert because she's a regularly published travel writer. if you don't believe me, check out this website: [...]
Her book is packed full of advice on how you can follow in her footsteps - as a travel writer - and start exploring new horizons, both literally and metaphorically. Solange wasn't born a travel writer, with a passport in her hand! She's worked hard to achieve her dreams, and her book shows you that you can do it too in just ten steps.

Like Solange, I am a travel writer, and like Solange, I used to teach the subject. So, I know quality advice when I see it. This is it, arguably the book I should have written, but happy that Solange has done so now, and just as arguably, better than I could have done. This is a lonely and demanding line of work, but if you want to give it a try, here's the best guidebook on the subject you're likely to find.

I was hooked right from the introduction. When you begin a book, like a journey, you are full of anticipation but not sure how you'll feel en route. This was a wonderful, inspirational, and motivational book, jammed pack with practical advice, observations, anecdotes, personal experiences, market ideas, trends, tips, pitfalls and suggestions, together with a large helping of colour, flavour and everything to awaken your own senses and observational skills.I couldn't put it down! It's like having your own personal guide and tutor, a helpful friend to accompany you on your journey. I'm now so motivated and inspired, I'm just off to explore my local town, and make notes! A brilliant book to for all writers, travel or otherwise.

How I wish this book had been available a long time ago when I started out to be a travel writer. This step-by-step guide is full of useful information and tips, and is written in such a way that it is easy to understand.

Solange explains how to research your markets, check what is available at your destinations and your travel arrangements. Then there are things that travel writers SHOULD do and things they SHOULDN'T do - such as nagging an editor!

She also uses some of her own experiences - good, bad and funny - to illustrate points she is making.

By following her advice there is no excuse not to follow Solange Hando's example and become a successful travel writer.

This is a glorious book written in a clear, succinct style. It brims over with advice, ideas and tips and is written in fabulously accessible language. Solange’s enthusiasm for her subject shines from the pages. Her approach is chatty, humorous and informative which makes this book immensely readable. In her section, ‘Winning Ideas’, she writes about the ‘flamboyant tutor who swept in like a ray of sunshine and arranged potted plants on the desk’. As soon as I read those few words I was immediately whisked back ten years to our French House Party art class in the Languedoc Roussillon where I met Solange for the first time. The author shows her readers how to capture the moment, how to use the five senses to produce work that sings. She has written a page turner guaranteed to encourage and inspire. A must-buy book for would-be travel writers, or indeed those who are already published.
