Book Description

15 Mar 2014

With practical advice, fascinating background history, detailed maps, and a wealth of color photos and memorabilia, Travel Route 66 is the ultimate guide to the Main Street of America.

Long one of America's most cherished byways, Route 66 remains a popular tourist attraction and travel route for thousands of travelers every year. While stretches of the once-glorious road have been paved over or bypassed by the interstates, the journey from Chicago to Santa Monica along the path of the "double six" remains chock-full of unique roadside attractions, spectacular natural landscapes, and fascinating historical landmarks. Communities throughout each of the eight states touched by the "Main Street of America"-Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California-have embraced this vital piece of American history and offer a vast array of opportunities to experience the grandeur as well as the lost innocence of the glory days of Route 66.

In Travel Route 66, Route 66 expert and enthusiast Jim Hinckley provides detailed descriptions and itineraries that allow travelers of all ages and inclinations to explore the myriad wonders to be found along the highway's 2,500 miles. In addition to specific recommendations for places to visit, eat, and spend the night, Hinckley presents history for the highway and its attractions and suggests detours and daytrips off the beaten path, all while providing a vivid picture of the road that has long captured the imaginations of travelers from throughout the world. Illustrated with a wealth of color photos and vintage memorabilia, Travel Route 66 is a practical and entertaining guide to the America's Mother Road.

5.0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive guide for all Route 66 fanatics. 29 April 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I bought this book as it was recently published and we were due to travel on route 66 - this book was invaluable as unfortunately Route 66 is not always easy to follow- roads are closed, road signs have been removed by collectors . My son was determined to follow the route as exactly as possible and I spent many happy hours directing using this book, a road map and our Sat Nav - most of the time this was to make sure we were going in the right direction!!
We had a wonderful adventurous holiday and saw most if not all of the sights described in the book- our only wish was for a road map to be included somewhere in this book. Another very minor criticism was that some of the roads had closed as I suspect will happen year by year as parts of route 66 becomes less used.
This book is certainly the one to buy if you are looking to follow the route as accurately as possible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Route 66 expert Jim Hinckley guides a memorable trip down 66 11 April 2014
By writeronthego - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Jim Hinckley’s Travel Route 66 is a winner from the cover that displays Route 66 icons to the handy index in the back. It is a nice size for armchair reading or to toss in the car for road trips. Organized state-by-state starting with Illinois, it can be read straight through or you can dip in to find what are the most tempting topics to you. It has detailed descriptions to guide the Route 66 traveler along the road. The book is colorful and well illustrated with bright photos. Its attractive layout makes it easy on the eyes. Hinckley does a good job chronicling the people, places, and the activities of the Mother Road and makes sure that you don’t miss the highpoints or hidden gems along the road. It’s definitely worth the price of admission for this trip down 66 whether you are preparing for a road trip or have a fascination with this aspect of American Culture.

4.0 out of 5 stars Route 66 3 July 2014
By D.A Clark - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Travel Route 66 is a great travel guide for those curious about the world famous highway. The author is clear and informative in his writing, although I do feel like the language sometimes felt a little stiff. The book also features a massive array of beautiful, high quality pictures that were a joy to look at. As far as travel guides go, I liked this. I do generally prefer more casual guides ( in terms of language) but nevertheless this was still a fun and enlightening read. Would recommend.

Note: I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.
