Product Description

An original, full-length horror novel.

TERRIFIED...

It was supposed to be a harmless camping trip. Six wayward teenagers who'd run into trouble with the law, and their court-appointed guardians, Sara and Martin Randhurst. Three nights on a small, deserted island off of Michigan's upper peninsula. A time to bond, to learn, to heal.

Then Martin told a campfire story about the island's history. Of the old civil war prison hidden in there, and the starving confederate soldiers who resorted to cannibalism to stay alive. Everyone thought it was funny. They even laughed when Martin pretended to be dragged off into the woods.

But Martin didn't come back. And neither did Sara when she went in search of him.

Then the laughter stopped.

...TO DEATH

The group soon began to realize that this deserted island wasn't so deserted after all. And perhaps Martin's ridiculous story had more truth to it than anyone thought.

What's the most horrifying thing you can imagine?

This is a hundred times worse...

TRAPPED by Jack Kilborn
It starts where other horror ends

A Word of Warning:

This is the long-awaited follow-up to AFRAID, one of the most horrifying books ever written.

Originally scheduled to be released in paperback in 2010, the publisher read the first version of the manuscript and refused to release it. The author made extensive changes, rewriting much of the story. The publisher still refused.

This is a disturbing, terrifying book. You may think you're brave enough to handle it. But you're probably not...

Contains bonus excerpts from ENDURANCE by Jack Kilborn, and AFRAID by Jack Kilborn, as well as DESERT PLACES by Blake Crouch.

But that's not all...

Taking advantage of ebook format and technology, the author is also proud to offer as a bonus; the entire original first draft of TRAPPED.

This ebook package contains two versions of the same book, dramatically different in parts. See what was cut. See what was changed. Read new characters, new scenes, and a different ending. Decide for yourself which version you prefer.

This is the very first time an ebook has been made available in two different versions, for one low price.

This is specially formatted for Kindle, with an active table of contents. With both versions, this ebook is over 180,000 words.

Ever since I read Jack Kilborn's debut novel 'Afraid' I have been eagerly awaiting a follow up.
It seemed that Trapped was never going to get published as planned so I was delighted to find it available as an e-book (AND the follow on from that, 'Endurance' which I shall also review).

I can only say the wait was worth it! Kilborn writes the most breathlessly exciting and, yes, extremely nasty, books I have ever read. I defy anyone, after the first few chapters, to put one of them down! He uses a very clever 'cliffhanger' device at the end of most chapters that just keeps the pages turning well into the wee hours!

With Trapped - a very loose sequel/prequel to 'Afraid' - we are presented with a very simple premise of a group of 'difficult' teens who've been taken away to a remote island for a survival weekend by their counsellors/guardians, Sara and Martin.

After Martin tells a scary campfire story about a hidden civil war prison and a history involving cannibalistic Confederate soldiers he abruptly goes missing in the woods.

Thinking it's a prank, no one is too concerned. But when Martin fails to return and the kids split up to go looking for him, then the horror really begins and their 'survival' weekend takes on a very literal meaning...

From this point Kilborn launches us on a horrific roller coaster ride encompassing cannibals, traps, mad scientists, torture, page turning suspense and two VERY scary villains in the guises of 'Subject 33' and the towering, terrifying, sharp toothed 'Lester'. Oh, and a LOT of gore!

It may sound very far fetched but Kilborn's great skill is in making this crazy stuff seem very believable. Beyond the shocks and gore, Kilborn is a very skilled writer and a master storyteller (and, unlike a certain Mr King, he ALWAYS has a decent ending).

The characters are so well drawn you find yourself either rooting for them or rooting for their inevitably unpleasant demise! As Hollywood often seems to forget, horror is only effective if you care for the characters.

Obviously not a book for the faint-hearted, but any self respecting horror/thriller fan with a strong stomach should lap this up and then want more!

That the publishers apparently refused to print this is quite staggering. I work in a bookshop and have sold loads of copies of Afraid and could do equally well with this one. Hopefully it will find a 'paper' release eventually but, in the meanwhile, if you have the means to read an e-book, what are you waiting for?!

By the way, 'Jack Kilborn' is actually the pseudonym of one J.A. Konrath who, under his real name, writes a fantastic series of detective novels which are also fairly nasty in places but heavily loaded with humour. Kilborn tends to leave the humour at home...

I don't like giving up on a book, it kept me reading and turing those pages, purely to get to the end!! I have just about managed to stick this one out!

I thought the plot was far fetched, far too much silly gore - I don't mind gore but too much just turned off my interest!

The way the characters spoke irritated me.

I was just glad to finish it!!

I thought the idea of two novels in one was interesting and I thought I'd enjoy reading the two versions. I've not bothered!

Great read! 1 Dec 2011

What I like about this author is that whilst his stories are extremely far-fetched, he captivates you with his writing, and you can actually believe you're right there with the characters. I liked the style of this book. Rather than tell the story of each character before any action happens, he breaks up the action with a little background of each one. That sometimes came as a much needed breather from the violence and gore.

I really found myself cringing at a lot of parts here, and I got so immersed. Almost every scene was left with a cliff-hanger before cutting to another character's situation, and I really wanted to know what was going to happen.

Great escapism, and a great read! I haven't read the original version yet, I'll read something else before I do that so as not to get too familiar with it.
