Product Description

Classic drama starring Burt Lancaster, Tony Curtis and Gina Lollobrigida as trapeze artists who find themselves caught up in a love triangle. Mike Ribble (Lancaster) was once at the very top of his profession - one of the few men ever to have pulled off the perilous triple somersault. However, Mike has paid the price for his professional daring and is now crippled. He sees something of himself in Tino (Curtis), a talented young performer who begs Mike to teach him how to do the triple somersault. Mike agrees to take Tino under his wing, but the relationship of the two men begins to degenerate when they both find themselves falling for the beautiful Lola (Lollobrigida). Personal rivalry is a dangerous thing in a profession where one slip can be fatal...

It is over 40 years since I first saw this film but time has not diminished its appeal. It has a taut and convincing storyline with good acting and a fine script. The principal delight are the trapeze scenes which are magnificently performed. The ambition of the young flyer (Tony Curtis) is to learn from the old cynical circus hand Burt Lancaster how to execute one of the circus's great feats namely the triple somersault mid air. The main thrust of the storyline covers their growing joint realisation that they can achieve this together. The love interest adds a relevant and pointed aspect to the psychological interaction of the two male leads. Buy this film. It is a classic.

Burt Lancaster traded on his former life as a trapeze artist for this melodrama, easily one of the most enjoyable of circus movies. He plays a famed flyer who is coaxed back after an accident that has left him with a limp by Tony Curtis, who wants to learn the near impossible triple somersault, until Gina Lollabrigida muscles in on their act and sets them against each other. Lancaster is on great form, either in the air or pinching his unwanted protégée's drink, Curtis (doubled in the acrobatic scenes by Lancaster's former circus partner Nick Cravat) is amiably enthusiastic, and La Lollabrigida is about as subtle as a flying sledgehammer, delivering lines like "I wuz alwayz strong in da legs" for considerably more than they're worth.

With a colourful supporting cast, including snake-hater Sid James trying to sell a used python (he apparently took the part to pay off another gambling debt), and a terrific array of behind-the-scenes talent (director Carol Reed, cinematographer Robert Krasker, composer Malcolm Arnold), Trapeze is a lavishly produced audience picture with a few inspired moments in the air. The first performance is a terrific piece of direction and editing and looks terrific in widescreen. This is a film that makes such full use of the Scope ratio that it's always been marred by panning-and-scanning on TV, very consciously designed for the CinemaScope screen that at the time was almost as big a draw as the stars at the box-office, so it's good to see the original ratio preserved on this DVD even if the print is a tad grainy in places.

Ambitious highflier, played by Tony Curtis, arrives at the circus in Paris looking for a once famous trapeze artist, played by Bert Lancaster, whose career was ruined by a bad fall that left him a cripple. He wants him to teach him the 'Triple' so he will become famous. Gina Lollobrigida gets in on the act providing sparkle and glamour. A love triangle develops between them threatening the 'Triple' act. The most spectacular authentic circus movie ever made, very enjoyable.

YOU SEE THIS AND YOU WISH YOU HAD WINGS AND COULD FLY-

Burt Lancaster was a maverick of his generation and was a Trapeze artist which was his first love and he indulges here in toto and does full justice to a great role requiring immense stamina and talent .

That he looks much better then the likes of Brad Pitt or Cruise is added on by his immense acting talent .
The best circus drama ever made and Trapecio is a tremendous achievement .
Carol Reed directs with a whimsical charm giving his 3 leads all the screen space they deserve and desire and makes this a sheer delight.

Three gorgeous human specimens in leotards in a European circus act with Burt Lancaster in his prime trying to do the impossible Triple flip .
His catcher is the young stud Curtis who is vying for Lolo's charms and the love triangle is as delicious as a triple scoop of Italian gelato .

Breathtaking stunts -gorgeous visual design and tremendously entertaining -Carol Reed had a visual sense which is rare in cinema and the camera angles used are amazing but not as amazing as the physical forms of Burt and Gina who look like celestial beings and seem like Greek Gods have decided to grace the screen
A must see .

I hadn't seen this film for years but it was always in the back of my mind to buy it. Once i bought it i watched it straight away. One of the best films ever made. makes todays films look wooden because of the acting. all three stars gave a brilliant performance. They dont make films like these any more and if they did it would be all special effects.

Burt Lancaster ! What more is there to say ! A legend !
Forty four years of films with Birdman from Alcatraz topping them all.
These films will be watched for generations to come.
Worthy of a place in my DVD collection any time.

Burt Lancaster is just beautiful. I saw this film many years ago as a young child. I am now 52 and it still makes me want to run away to the Circus!
My daughters friends watched it with her (she is 11 years old) They were captivated by the story, it is suitable for all ages. Good family viewing.
