My van wouldn't be running now if it wasn't for this book. As a total novice some of the diagrams take time to get my head around but they are invaluable. There is also a section that explains how to carry out a basic service which is next on my list ;-)

This is typical of the Haynes manual. If you own one of these T25/T3 its a must have and I have used mine several times already within the month to sort out the cooling and electrical system. It saves a fortune on minor jobs that otherwise may need to be performed by a garage.

Better than nothing

I bought this book because I was trying to troubleshoot a windshield wiper electrical problem. I have a 1985 Vanagon, however I found the electrical diagrams lacking. Although, this book covers 1982-1990 Transporters, there was only a single "typical/representative" diagram for all those years. Therefore, I did not have a specific 1985 electrical diagram which I needed. In my opinion this severely limits the usefulness of the electrical section. Since third party Repair manuals for Vanagons are hard to find, I am hopeful that the rest of this book will be more useful.

The guide is what can be expected of Haynes - thorough and clear descriptions of pretty much everything the DIY mechanic would attempt on the VW Vanagon. The book will save you money and time (and frustration) and should give even the most novice mechanic the confidence to attempt jobs they wouldn't usually approach.

There are 2 kinds of Haynes Manuals.
The domestic US versions are based on the disassembly of a representative vehicle. They are softcover and are printed on what feels like newsprint. Content is spotty if the model you bought isn't the one they took apart. The authors try to fill in the gaps but they aren't always successful.
The European versions are well researched and written. Differences in procedures are usually based on models and features not being sold on both sides of the pond. They cost twice as much as the domestic manuals and are well worth the price difference. The hardcover and slick paper account for part of the price. Content does too.

That having been said, the pictures of Vanagons with sliding doors on the left side of the vehicle take some getting used to. That's how they build them when the steering wheel is on the other side of the bus.
