The concept is very simple--run goods from where they're supplied to where they're in demand, make a profit, try to get subsidies/monopolies and drive your opponents into bankruptcy. The scope of the game is huge. You can go over land, sea and air. The graphics still look great considering that the game is several years old now and the sound effects add to the atmosphere. New additions to Transport Tycoon Deluxe include several new world environments which are more in the fantasy realm, such as sub-arctic, sub-tropical, Toyland, a world scenario editor--so you can simulate your own real world area as well as heliports and "maglev" trains and tracks. You can also sell and buy shares in opposing companies in a bid to put them out of business.
In terms of multiplayer you can either play the computer or play over a LAN and the manual says that the opposing AI is smarter and gives you a more realistic opponent, laying better transport networks and recognising where to invest and where to close unprofitable lines more efficiently than before. At the harder difficulty settings, the computer opponent is not that easy to beat. Basically if you like management sims you won't find a lot more challenging and entreating than this classic. --Charles Kent

A great game, but this version has problems on newer PC's,
This review is from: Transport Tycoon: Replay - Deluxe (PC CD) (Video Game)
I bought this game after hearing how good it was and also I am a great fan of the RollerCoaster Tycoon franchise so buying Chris Sawyer's first game was perfect. But it will not work on an NT operating-system (Windows 2000, NT 4.0, XP)The one great thing about this game is that it is not a one locomotive simulator such as Railroad Tycoon, in this game you get to build roads, railways, airports, harbours and buy trains, planes and automobiles. Also it is like SimCity as you link cities together and if you get a really good transport system going the cities will expand from the money made and villages can turn into giant cities. The graphics are 8-bit, 256 colours, but in 1994-1995 they were amazing, they differ slightly to RollerCoaster Tycoon as less colourful and detailed. The music can sometimes get annoying but they are only old batch MIDI files so I can live with that. They did not have such adavance systems in those days. Now people have been saying in their reviews about a patch from openTTD and ttdpatch.net which will make the game work on XP, but this "replay" version may state Windows 95 on it but it is the orignal DOS version so a no-go for NT systems. But it will work perfectly with 95,98,ME or any DOS system. One of the great simulaton games to date and still adored and played by many people.

I love this game! I have played the original Trans Tycoon from a demo version, and still have my original full copy. I just bought this as I hoped to play an open source version on XP. For that you need the windows95 version. Although this says its windows 95 it is the wrong version for openTTD! I can't describe how disgusted I am that I can't play it now its delivered.

Transport Tycoon takes the best gameplay elements of its peers, adds in a model railway feel, and comes up with the most captivating recipe for a business simulation for many years before or since. There are patches available to get the game running under Windows XP, but they are variable in their functionality. A better idea is to use a partition with DOS installed and run it from there with some default drivers for mouse and sound. It's fiddly, and a great shame that Microprose haven't seized the opportunity to update the game's code to run under XP, but it IS possible to get it to run, and well worth the effort. Despite the simple graphics, just observing the fruits of your efforts is a joy - it's very easy to spend ages just watching buses and trains huffing around station networks, planes zooming around the skies and skimming in low over city centres, and boats chugging around the coasts. It's all deeply engaging and drains hours from your life without you even noticing. The balance of spending in droves early to recoup later on, with trying to hold back to save for faster trains that improve your revenue margins is not too tricky, but utterly attention-holding. This 'Deluxe' edition includes differing landscapes supposedly calling on you to employ varying strategies, although the variations are primarily cosmetic. But it gives the game a little added spice, and the possibilities for huge stations and rings of railway have been improved, as has the AI of the vehicles needing to find their way around twisting paths, though it's still not perfect and you occasionally need to sacrifice a route rather than lose buses into the hills and planes to the edge of the map. Ignore other games in the ... Tycoon series, this is far and away the most satisfying, involving, smartest game of the lot, and in my book, one of the best games I've ever played. If you can get it installed and running on today's operating systems, this game is a must-have for your collection.
