Product Description

Synopsis

Examining all aspects of transport in Ancient Egypt, both on land and on water, this work shows how, without the Nile, Egypt would be no more than a desert. The river was far more than just a source of water; it was the main highway through the country, a feature quickly to be exploited to the full by the Ancient Egyptians. Running the length of the country, it afforded good communications and played no small part in the unification of Egypt around 3100 BC, and the success of a civilization which was to last for 3000 years. Scenes carved and painted on tombs and temples survive, showing small papyrus rafts, merchant boats, and the great vessels of the kings and gods. The king is also shown riding in his chariot. However, because of the dry climate, and funeral practices, Egypt is unique in that we do not have to rely solely on artists' representations. Full-scale examples of ships and chariots have survived, and from these we can see how they were made, and marvel at the technical skills required.

5.0 out of 5 stars MOBILITY 4 April 2011
By A. Taylor TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover
An excellent introduction to the subject with chapters on water transport, both wooden and papyrus boats, and land transport. The later chapter covers the road network, walking, carrying chairs etc. I particularly liked Mr Partridges approach in which he considers, and presents , the evidence for his statements rather than just saying so and so as used in this way.... . Lots of information provided on most modes of transport and in some cases very detailed and specific, i.e. Khufu's boat from Giza.

Very well illustrated with both photographs and line drawings, some 141 pages long with an excellent glossary of terms. First published in 1996, it's probably a little out of date re cutting edge but I believe that the majority of the information won't have changed, a really good introduction to the subject.

5.0 out of 5 stars fascinating introduction to transport 30 Aug 2000
By Francesca Jourdan - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
In this book, the author accurately presents all means of transport available to the Ancient Egyptians : Papyrus rafts, chariots, boats, chariots and donkeys are only a few of the methods discussed. The book includes a glossary of nautical terms. A fascinating insight into the world of transport, both by water and by land, in Ancient Egypt, this is highly recommended for both laymen and scholars.
