2 LEARNING PRODUCTS IN 1!

The Transparent Language Premium Edition is a full language course with a lesson plan designed to develop your conversational fluency in a new language. This easy-to-use immersion course enables learners to take basic vocabulary and quickly progress to more advanced comprehension and use. Grammar, vocabulary, reading, listening and conversation practice are emphasised through text, videos and stories.

To REALLY learn a language, just do TWO things…

The Transparent Language Premium Edition combines the two methods needed to achieve language proficiency. This interactive self-study program delivers both vocabulary and real language in natural context. It offers a simple and engaging multimedia learning environment, providing guidance yet leaving you in control to learn at your own pace.

1. Master critical vocabulary - acquire over 1,000 words and phrases with Byki - a fun, rapid learning system.

2. Use REAL language in natural context - explore comprehensive lessons, real immersion videos and stories in your new language that will guide you to speaking confidently.

Uncomplicated Learning Environment

Whether you're a complete beginner or an experienced computer user, you'll find Transparent Premium Edition a breeze to use. The main program screen is modelled after a book for ease of use. The book interface provides easy-to-follow chapters and pages for lessons to help you find your way around.

Learn and Never Forget

Transparent Premium Edition automatically records your learned material and reminds you of older items that may need to be refreshed or studied again. Plus, you can use the built-in tests and online quizzes to test your knowledge at any time. By doing so, you will take your language knowledge from your short-term memory to your long-term memory in the quickest possible time.

Learn Key Words and Phrases

Build your vocabulary base using a proven flash card method with the integrated Byki learning engine. Experts agree that the most important part of learning a language is rapidly building a foundation of word and phrase knowledge. Byki is the fastest, most direct path to that goal - it "hacks" into your memory and fills it with foreign words and phrases.

The Rapid Way to Master Vocabulary

This flash card program can help you learn more than 1,000 words and phrases to build your vocabulary base.

Next, take the vocabulary you have learned and apply it to the lessons in the Transparent Language System. In that program, you can improve your listening, reading, grammar and speaking skills. You can do the lessons in the recommended order or, if you prefer, jump around to customise your learning experience.

Build your Reading and Listening Skills

Now use your new vocabulary to build your reading and listening skills.

Develop your written and verbal skills with a full course including lesson plans to develop your conversational skills. Native language texts, videos and stories immerse you in the native language helping you to communicate without having to think about it - just like you do in English.

Learn How to Speak Like a Native

Practise speaking your chosen language by participating in conversational role-plays and realistic dialogues. Record your voice and then play back the conversation (a microphone is required). Then perfect your pronunciation by comparing it to a native speaker. You'll be able to build exceptional listening and speaking skills through Conversation practice.

As you progress through Premium's lessons you'll find yourself communicating in your chosen language without having to think about it - just like you do in English!

Practise on the Bus, Train or Beach

Learn on the go! The Premium Edition comes with dozens of Byki Pod MP3 files ready for you to use. Listen to these files on your iPhone, iPod touch, iPod nano, or any other MP3 player. Now you can practise your favourite language wherever you are.

Have Fun and Speak Confidently

After practising with Byki and the Transparent Language System, have some fun with activities and games, including Crosswords, Dictation, Plug-n-Play and Vocabulous.

1.0 out of 5 stars not exactly "premium" 5 May 2010
By Su TOP 100 REVIEWER
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I got this language lesson at the same time as a Latin language lesson by the same company. I know number of people who are of Russian origin and I thought it would be a good idea to learn language so that I could communicate with them in their language as well is them communicating with me in English. As with the Latin course when I was offered this I thought I'd give it a go - and boy do I wish I hadn't bothered.

APPEARANCE

The "Premium" course is a single CD-ROM disc inside a poor cardboard cover; it doesn't even have a plastic protective wallet to save the disc from scratches caused by the cardboard jacket. Thankfully, someone at Amazon's warehouse had parcelled this in one of those thick wrap-round recyclable cardboards, if they hadn't I am sure that the disc would arrived in pieces.

But, as they say, appearances aren't everything, so I loaded the program on my computer and started it up.

The initial image was similar to the digital library (or digital readers/tablets) where a number of books appear on screen and you select the ones that you want to try (eg, the Beginners Russian "book") then click on the relevant area you want to use. It added the Russian lesson books to the existing Latin library.

CONTENT

There are 4 "books": Beginners Lessons (which has 15 lessons in it), Fundamentals (10 lessons), St Petersburg (4 lessons) and Getting Around Russia (5 lessons). Each lesson within each "book" contains "vocabulary" (flash cards) and "reading" options.

As I work my way through the first several series of "flashcards" I had a dreaded feeling of de-ja-vu, but I continued on regardless. Unfortunately, I was disappointed to discover that, once again, there is no logic to the selection of words in each lesson.

1.0 out of 5 stars Clunky software 22 May 2010
By ziggy_fan TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
What a shame. I was looking forward to using this PC based course. Unfortunately there are some bugs in the software and very non intuitive ways of operating the lessons and sequences which make this a very user unfriendly package. Trying to figure out the best way to use the software is more difficult than the language. A very annoying bug is the fact that the written test sections don't pick up my Toshiba laptop's own keyboard, which meant I had to try to use the slow and clunky onscreen keyboard that the software gives you. Unfortunately then it becomes impossible to write letters with special characters, which is crucial in russian. This means it's impossible to move past the 3rd section of the first lesson.

What a waste of time. A real shame. Not recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good coverage of language 17 Mar. 2011

Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Initally when the software arrived and I opened it, I was expecting more than just a cd, especially for the price. However, after now using the software on my PC (Vista) and I was impressed at the range of subject covered.

I have used other software learning tools, and the menu system felt relatively modern and easy to navigate. The course was fairly comprehensive too with Grammar, verbs and general day to day conversations covered through a range of activities. It's definitely aimed at someone who really wants to learn the language rather than just picking up a few words for a holiday.

Overall I was surprised by this seemingly slimline package and would recommend the software to anyone wanting to boost their language while taking an evening course or who wants to try and learn by themselves.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good in parts 12 May 2010
By Mr Gumby TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
The CD came in rather cheap packaging but installed easily on Windows 7 and ran smoothly. I groaned when the introduction started in an American voice, but the intro is the only place I heard it. That still leaves the issue of US English spelling which is irritating but, to be fair, not an inhibitor to learning. It's a shame they couldn't have localised it for the UK, though - wouldn't have been difficult.

I felt that having a basic knowledge of the language before using the program might help a user get the best out of it, but this certainly isn't essential.

I did a couple of years of Russian at school, many years ago, and still remembered the alphabet. Not that I think the alphabet is very difficult, especially compared with Arabic or Oriental alphabets. In fact, in some ways, Russian is a relatively easy language to learn. It is much more regular than English and has no definite or indefinite articles, for example. On the other hand, in a number of other ways, it's distinctly tricky! For example, you have to fret about gender.

As for the software itself, I found the interface unimpressive and there were inconsistencies across the various elements. I'm not convinced by the flashcard approach to vocabulary and got very irritated at the number of times I had to click buttons or hit Enter to progress through the tests. Overall, though, it's usable, fairly comprehensive and gets the job done. I didn't hit the bug mentioned by Su B.

What I can't do, sadly, is compare with other CBT products. There is plenty of room for improvement in this product but it would probably get you to a stage where you could communicate in Russian. It may well be of value to students up to, say, GCSE level.
