Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

The Transparent Language Complete Edition is a powerful and flexible language learning solution that gives you four language learning products in one affordable package. It will take you on a journey beginning with the basics and take you as far as you want to go, all at a pace that suits you.

So whether you prefer audio courses, reading, immersion, or conversational practice, The Complete Edition will lead you to language proficiency in no time!
1. Start by rapidly building your vocabulary base with the acclaimed Byki Deluxe 4.0, based on a proven flash card method.

Experts agree that the most important part of learning a language is rapidly building a foundation of word and phrase knowledge. Byki is the fastest, most direct path to that goal — it “hacks” into your memory and fills it with foreign words and phrases. Whereas traditional learning methods spread their learning out across a multitude of lessons and activities, Byki gets right down to business with a proven three step process:

  • Byki guides you through a review of the material you will learn.
  • Byki teaches you to recognise the written and spoken forms of each word.
  • Finally, you will be able to express yourself in your new language by speaking or writing it on your own.

In just your first session, the Byki 3-step process will teach you 100 critical Quick Start phrases for use in common, real-life situations.

How much have you forgotten?

Maybe you've studied another language before. If so, do you remember everything you learned?

Using Byki ensures that you'll keep everything you learn in your long-term memory, forever.
As you use the three step process, Byki will keep track of what you learn and use its Intelligent Refresh system to help you review the items you might forget along the way. Lots of language products provide a means to learn a language.

Only Byki makes that knowledge permanent.

Byki knows what you need...

Most products take a one-size-fits-all approach to teaching languages. The Complete Edition provides a personalised path to success based on your own strengths and weaknesses. It recognises the material you learn quickly and takes note of those items that give you more trouble. Finally it maximises the time you dedicate to language learning by focusing your efforts on the items that you find more challenging, without wasting your time on those you learn with ease.

Record your voice and then play back the conversation (a microphone is required). Then perfect your pronunciation by comparing it to a native speaker.

Play games, take quizzes and track your progress; Byki’s a language-learning powerhouse!

2. Take your learning on the road with audio lessons on CD.

Take advantage of “lost” time in your car, at the gym, or just around the house to speed up the learning process.

English speaking instructors guide you through each of the 35 easy-to-follow lessons. Native speakers provide examples of real-life dialogues that build your speaking and listening skills.

You simply listen and repeat. It’s as easy as that.

The Complete Edition also comes with dozens of Byki Pod MP3 files. Use these files on your iPhone, iPod touch, iPod nano, or any other MP3 player. Now you can practise your favourite languages wherever you are.

3. Develop your written and verbal skills with a full course including lesson plans to develop your conversational skills.
You can do the lessons in the recommended order, or, if you prefer, jump around to customise your learning experience.

Learn thousands of words and phrases including the following topics:

  • Taking a taxi and asking for directions
  • At the restaurant
  • Meeting and greeting
  • Emergencies
  • Asking the time, Weather and seasons
  • Shopping and bargaining
Learn how to speak like a native

Practise speaking your chosen language by participating in conversational role-plays and realistic dialogues.

As you progress you'll be able to call upon the large vocabulary base you've built and your developing conversational skills.

Suddenly you’ll find yourself communicating without a script.

In other words, you’ll be speaking your new language!

4. Instantly access over 65,000 words and their English equivalents. As you practise your new language, you may run across an unfamiliar word here and there. The Lexicon Translation Dictionary won't let that slow you down!

The Lexicon Translation Dictionary includes all the words you need to communicate in everyday situations as well as technical terms for specific areas including:

  • Arts and Media
  • Business
  • Science, Law and Politics
  • Transport and more

Language titles in the Complete Edition range: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.

3.0 out of 5 stars Its Brazillian Portugese 7 Jun. 2010
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Overall this is a good and extensive learning package.

Whilst the audio cds are extensive (comprising 4 cds) it is the interactive section of the course that is more effective. Watching and doing is always going to be a more effective learning tool than listening and repeating.

My main and really only gripe is that this course covers Brazillian Portugese - not European Portugese. The picture on the packaging does show South America but I suspect alot of buyers wouldn't notice this and would assume that it is a Eurpoean Portugese language course.

3.0 out of 5 stars More Rio than Lisbon... 30 May 2010

Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
The first thing prospective buyers should be aware of is that Transparent Portuguese primarily teaches Portuguese as spoken in Brazil. This doesn't devalue the package in any way of course, but buyers should be sure this is what they want as there are some differences between the European and Brazilian versions of Portuguese.

The course itself is comprehensive and well-structured and features a good variety of teaching methods, there's a natural progression route through the course but this doesn't seem too rigid and would allow a more free-form approach too. The introductory lessons begin with a flash-card method, just to give you some basic vocabulary and pronunciation, and then progress to more complex sentence structures and real-life scenarios. There are a selection of word-games you can play and these add some welcome variety to the course while helping to revise what you've already learned. There are also a wide selection of pre-prepared mp3 files for you to load onto your iPod or media-player - each file gives a word or phrase to practise and they're all thoughtfully tagged with the Portuguese and English meanings.

Separate to the main course is a full audio course on 4 standard audio CD's - these are more traditional 'listen & repeat' lessons and are a good extension to the main course, allowing you to practise when you're away from your computer. You could also use them in your iPod but you'll have to rip them yourself as mp3 versions are not provided.

The software runs smoothly (on Windows 7) and seems up-to-date but it's a shame the main course is not Mac-compatible (especially when it's mostly constructed using Flash and Quicktime) but for Windows-users it's a good value package with a quality look and feel.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I am the reviewer's wife. I speak Portuguese and have taught Beginners Portuguese at adult education classes. It is difficult to find good Portuguese teaching resources, so I was keen to have a look at this. Although not made clear on the product description (the map and a picture of Rio de Janeiro on the packaging was the giveaway) this course is for Brazilian rather than European Portuguese. There are differences in grammar, vocabulary and, of course, pronunciation but having spent time in both Portugal and Brazil, I would suggest that Brazilian Portuguese is easier for the beginner to understand.

Rather confusingly, the course is split into two: the `byki' software programme and the `Transparent Language System'. The byki software is a series of flashcards that teach you key vocabulary and reinforces it using several revision formats. Flashcards, especially those that do not contain any visual stimuli like pictures, are quite a dry way of learning and difficult to use without greater context such as using the new word in a phrase. However, when incorporated into the Transparent Language System, a series of virtual books resembling a more traditional language course, they make more sense. In fact, as a beginner, I would use the TLS books as the starting point for the myriad of different exercises covering every learning style - visual, auditory and kinaesthetic - available in this impressively weighty language course.

I was very pleased to see the easy-to-understand grammar reference which explained the parts of speech needed to learn a foreign language, and links to the Transparent Language website provided attractively presented background information on the alphabet and pronunciation.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This is a revised review, following the performance of their tech support team which was excellent and solved the major problem I had with this, which I will explain and provide the solution for below.

As other reviewers have noted, this is Brazilian Portuguese rather than European Portuguese. That's not a major issue for me, as that's what I wanted, but the two are distinctly different in terms of pronunciation as well as bits of grammar and vocab. If you try to speak Brazilian Portuguese in Lisbon or other major cities in Portugal, you will be understood but if you go into more rural areas, you may well get blank faces (I know, I've tried!). Maybe in the US, where this product is produced, you can get away with calling it just Portuguese because users are more likely to visit Brazil than Portugal, but if you are selling it in Europe, you should call it what it is - Brazilian Portuguese.

The audio CDs are pretty good and the software is a good attempt at making it an interactive and relatively fun learning experience - probably as fun as you can make learning a language on your own. I have been learning Brazilian through Pimsleur's audio course - but that has no written aspect, so this was the bit I wanted as well as having some other audio to practice on. It's a lot cheaper than the Pimsleur programme and while perhaps not as thorough, it does incorporate reading and writing which the audio programmed don't use. It can be a bit "language lab" like, but that's a bit inevitable. Overall, it's a good resource.

Tech issue for XP operating system.

The tech problem I had seems to only apply to XP. Users of Vista and Windows 7 seem immune from this issue.
