This installed easily on Windows 7 and ran smoothly. I groaned when the introduction started in an American voice, but the intro is the only place I heard it. That still leaves the issue of US English spelling which is irritating but, to be fair, not an inhibitor to learning. It's a shame they couldn't have localised it for the UK, though - it wouldn't have been difficult.
Another negative is inconsistency in the use of the definite article le/la when teaching nouns - sometimes they insist on it, other times they reject it as wrong! There is no latitude. For example, it insists on "le frère", refusing to accept frère, but won't allow "l'homme", insisting on homme. Not good, and very confusing for a beginner who doesn't know the software got it wrong. (Or am I showing my ignorance?).
The introductory lessons are very basic, but you quickly get through them, if you have a fundamental knowledge of the language. Of course, you can skip them altogether, if you prefer.
There is relatively little teaching of grammar, so the software works best if you're interested in conversational language rather than passing exams. Having said that, I feel it would be of value to anyone practising for GSCEs, although probably not for more-advanced qualifications.
Software can never be a substitute for conversation with others, preferably native speakers, but this package probably offers about as much as you could expect from a PC-based course. It certainly refreshed and extended my vocabulary as well as enabling me to improve my pronunciation (in private!), and I enjoyed using it. I recommend it to beginners or those wishing to refresh rusty skills.

There is little point in setting down details of this French language course as Amazon's "Product Description" and "Manufacturer's Description" give a truly comprehensive and correct overview of `Transparent French Premium' and leave no doubts as to system requirements for operation and use. I use a PC with Windows XP but I note it can also run on a Mac. The initial "guided tour" is easy to follow and understand. `Transparent French Premium' is referred to as "a full language course" which it may be insofar as the mechanics are concerned, but inevitably words and conversation situations are limited. All interaction is done relying on `speech' at the expense of sometimes overlooking or not explaining `grammar'. `Transparent French Premium' is perhaps not as well structured as orthodox courses but it is easy to dip into, and there is provision for recording progress. All this makes it surprising just how much is included on a single DVD, and it is way in front of phrasebook methods of learning.
Within its restricted coverage `Transparent French Premium' is an excellent product, and it is extremely good at what it does. This includes pronunciation as well as vocabulary and the context in which this is used. There is emphasis on application of key words and phrases via a variety of interactive approaches to building skills using lessons, tests, stories, games, videos etc. with a "flash card" method of reinforcing learning, plus facilities to load onto iPod or iPhone for practice wherever the learner may be. I have not used the iPod/iPhone options and neither have I attempted to download words and phrases to my inbox but I understand this is possible. With all mechanics in place I would prefer additional modules (perhaps a second DVD) to be available to increase vocabulary and to introduce further circumstances for conversations. Transparent French is a very comprehensive beginner's course in French. The product has a number of components: phrase book, flash cards, vocab, reading and speaking exercises, which are all very well presented and easy to navigate.
The course seems more aimed at conversational French than strict grammatical training and in this role provides excellent facilities for improving your fluency and pronunciation.
There is also the very useful additional feature of copying off MP3s to your player so that you can continue to brush up your French on the journey to work.
