Product Description

This book offers a proven tool for sharpening one's competitive edge. Today's leading organizations have seized on the concept of transparency as the key to gaining the confidence of investors, employees, and customers - and gaining profits. In "The Transparency Edge", leadership expert Barbara Pagano demonstrates that transparency is more than an excellent policy - it is a powerful management skill that managers can learn and use to make themselves and their organizations more competitive. Presenting the nine behaviors that every successful leader uses to gain a transparency edge, Pagano shows readers how to use these techniques to build loyalty, gain trust, and establish an impeccable reputation for integrity. She also shows how this nothingto-hide approach enables organizations and their leaders to: make decisions more efficiently and execute them more effectively; speed up operations; identify problems sooner and solve them faster; build trust and collaboration within the organization; and establish a higher level of credibility.

From the Back Cover

What separates a great leader from a capable manager? Why do some parts of your organization operate so much more effectively than others? Achieving leadership excellence and the rapid career advancement that comes with it requires more than intelligence, hard work, and dedication. To be the very best, you need an edge.

In The Transparency Edge, leadership expert Barbara Pagano demonstrates that a clear and open business policy is the most powerful management tool ever. Backed by exclusive research of thousands of executives at Fortune 500 companies, this comprehensive guide to what-you-see-is-what-you-get leadership shows you how to practice a transparent management style that will increase your credibility, build loyalty among your direct reports, and gain the trust of your superiors. Successful transparency isn't simply letting it all hang out; to master this leadership style, managers must acquire a fine sense of how much and what information others can handle effectively and how to deliver that information in honorable, caring, and respectful ways. You'll learn how to develop an impeccable reputation, how to live up to that reputation every day, and how to use your good name to make yourself, your team, and your entire organization more competitive.

Through powerful case studies of some of America's most savvy executives, Pagano introduces nine key behaviors that every successful leader uses to gain a transparency edge. She shows you how this nothing-to-hide approach enables you to make decisions more efficiently and execute them more effectively, speed up operations, and increase productivity. You'll learn how to identify problems sooner and solve them faster; encourage trust and collaboration within your organization; and establish a higher level of credibility with coworkers, clients, and superiors. Find out how to:

-Be overwhelmingly honest about every business situation
-Make others want to share important information with you
-Compose yourself in stressful situations
-Match your words to your actions
-Enhance your reputation even when you make mistakes

(A version of this review was originally posted on my blog at www.robcuesta.com/blog)

This book isn't 'new' as such - it was first published in 2003, and the current edition is from 2005 - but the topic is just as relevant now as then.

The Transparency Edge caught my attention because, as a consultant, I have always been respected for what one of my past managers described as 'intellectual honesty' - the courage to tell a client that they are wrong, and the refusal to write a report that rubberstamped a decision I didn't agree with. At times this has seemed a career limiting move, so it was interesting to see a book that highlighted the business advantages of honesty and transparency.

The authors identify 9 behaviours which they believe the most successful leaders exhibit. These behaviours - be overwhelmingly honest, gather intelligence, compose yourself, let your guard down, keep promises, deliver bad news well, say you're sorry, watch your mouth, and don't hold your applause - cover how we interact not only with staff, but with all stakeholders, and the book is full of examples of leaders who have applied the principles, and also of leaders who failed to. Whether you are an executive looking to strengthen your own reputation, or a coach who is looking for tools to use with your clients, the book describes a wealth of techniques, many of which will find their way into my own practice. Among my favourites are 'hot seats', which put a completely new slant on the phrase '360 degree feedback': imagine sitting on a seat surrounded by your staff, peers and managers and inviting them to give open and honest feedback. It takes a courageous leader - but that is exactly what this book is trying to create - leaders who are not only courageous enough to tell the truth, but also to hear it, and act on it.

Most importantly, however, this is no pie-in-the-sky appeal for truth at any cost. The authors also offer suggestions for dealing sensitively, but honestly, with situations where the truth could have negative consequences. Too many leaders avoid awkward questions by vacillating or answering the question they wish had been asked instead. We need to learn to say "I do know the answer to that, but I can't discuss it now." Or even to admit when we just don't know!

Transparency, authenticity, honesty - whatever you want to call it - is an integral part of your personal brand. It should permeate everything you do, and guide your decisions. If you follow the advice in this book your staff, customers and suppliers will in turn be more open with you, allowing you to make better decisions, identify problems sooner, and follow through faster and more productively.

I'll be recommending this to all my clients as they move into living their personal brand.

Doing the Harder Right 9 Dec 2003
By Dirk Baxter - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
As an external consultant who is an Industrial/Organizational psychologist, I am impressed with the "common sense" approach of the Transparency Edge. As one who is grounded in the hard-core research as it applies to organizations and organizational development at the leader level, the anecdotes used effectively illustrate some of the common misperceptions and ethical shortcomings of high ranking professionals. This book is timely considering the events plastered all over the media recently. These events have brought down the largest companies in so ignoble of a way.

This book was recommended to me by a colleague because she knew that my research explored some of the darker sides of vocational interests, and it dovetails nicely into where my research left off. Leadership skills investigated in this book all deal with how to do a harder right instead of an easier wrong. We can all learn from this book as individuals, but leaders should definitely revisit these issues. I thoroughly enjoyed this "read."

Credibility is Critical to a Leader's Effectiveness 27 Oct 2003
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
A powerful tool that emphasizes behaviors necessary to establish and sustain credibility. Focuses on why credibility and integrity are so important in any leadership role as well as how to ensure you've got it. Reminds us that how we perceive ourselves is not always the same as how others' perceive us. It's essential for leaders to be aware of the gaps in order to address them.
