The road to take, 24 Oct 1999

Walt Patterson's is a very good book: he conveys all the excitement he feels about the future of electricity and has made me look forward to that future as to a great opportunity. The book is very well-built, too. It begins with a sketchy history of electrical power systems, which is both instructive and readable. Then the present situation of electrical generation and distribution is discussed, with plenty of cases taken from the power systems of OECD contries and developing countries. Finally, Mr Patterson tries to imagine what the future of electricity will be like and to suggest the right road to take: using new technologies and designing better and more flexible electrical equipment. At the end of the book, he suggests further readings on electricity and some interesting Web pages to look at.I have taken away one crown because I expected something a bit more technical, particularly on the intriguing subject of new technologies.

Enlightening message for enegy companies and society, 28 May 2000

This book is well written and captivated me from beginning to end. It gives an excellent introduction to the modern electricity market and generation industry and presents some well founded views of the future.In particular, the writer convincingly explains the dawning of a new age with current and alternative generation fuels and many more independent, distributed generators based locally rather than in huge centralised, capital intensive projects. Energy providers must carefully consider this book's message in their scenario planning if they do not wish it to be inadequate. If these forecasts come sooner than later some major players will fall by the wayside. Response should be proactive not reactive. I therefore recommend this book as an excellent introduction to the key energy issues facing our global societies and as a road map for energy industry companies trying to envisage their future market opportunities. Patterson provides an (unintended?) primer for indentifiying some business and investment opportunities for any budding entrepreneurs out there. It got me thinking!
