After the fan reaction and subsequent online petition to get the score to the new Transformers movie released - it is finally here. Despite being a loud and thumpingly enjoyable score it nevertheless seems to be lacking in something.
The CD comprises 20 tracks but 11 of these have `different versions in the film' and the track order is not sequential which is a little annoying - but that's only a minor quibble.
So what we get is a soundtrack a few seconds shy of an hour that sounds very much like several other movie soundtracks all merged into one. Elements of the score sound a tad like Batman Begins, Gladiator, Armageddon and even TekWar (for those that remember it) with a more thumping back beat. You would think that Steve Jablonsky had a weekend of watching action movies before composing this.
The tracks that are actually from the movie have all the hallmarks of a Michael Bay film - loud patriotic drum beat (you can practically see the Stars and Stripes flapping in the breeze as you listen to bits of this!), quick tempo and dramatic use of synths and lots of heavy percussion.
Don't get me wrong, this is a good soundtrack but as a score for something epic like the first live action Transformers movie it doesn't quite cut it. One of the main problems is that there are no clear examples of leitmotif for the characters. The track for Optimus Prime sounds like half the tracks on the CD. There seems to be just a rough theme for `good guys' and `bad guys' and the whole thing sounds more like a modern war movie score than a sci-fi action film. Given the massive history that Transformers has, Jablonsky could've even taken a nod from the original series in his compositions but hasn't even tried.
Some of the tracks do stand out though. Track 10 `Scorponok' is a great piece with a lot of synth sounds and an almost techno beat. Track 11 `Cybertron' is probably the most moving piece of music as Prime tells Sam what happened to their home and Track 3 `The All Spark' is as close as you'll get to a dramatic heroic theme here.
A must have for sci-fi enthusiasts and fans of the film only as the score is a US import so it's quite pricey. So, if you are getting this CD, take an hour off, put the bass on your player up to maximum, secure the breakables and as Jazz would say "Kick back and listen to some funky tunes!"
