Optimus Prime and Megatron have opposed each other since the Transformers began, and their fight continues even into this year's big-screen movie. And now, this collection looks back at many of the most awe-inspiring match-ups of these two polar opposites, spanning decades of Transformers comics.

By Mr. J. R. Coupland VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
After a brief sojourn to the Transformers' homeworld of Cybertron, in 'TheSmelting Pool' and 'The Bridge to Nowhere' (published in 'CybertronRedux'), events return to Earth as 'Showdown' gets underway. This is onevolume which really lives up to its title, as each story features ashowdown of some sort or another - Omega Supreme versus severalDecepticons, Skids versus Ravage, Optimus Prime versus Megatron...
Allowing the Transformers stranded on Earth to make contact with thosestill on Cybertron allows for Bob Budianski to shift the emphasis awayfrom the robots' interaction with the humans - although Circuit Breaker'sprominent presence in these stories shows that such concerns are stillpressing - and having to cope on an alien world, and onto instead a muchbigger canvas - the conflict becomes intergalactic. In quick succession, various new Transformers arrive on Earth from their homeworld - amongstthem the Insecticons, the Battlechargers and three new Decepticon jets -and make their presence known.
At this point in the comic's run, Bob Budianski was still riding quitehigh. True, this volume never threatens to reach the highs of his earlieststories or the trip back to Cybertron, but things here still come acrossas fresh, exciting and, in their way, believable. The motivations given tohuman characters such as Circuit Breaker, Donny Finkleberg and EthanZachary are plausible, and Optimus Prime remains noble and honourablethroughout.
Overall, however, this volume marks the end of the first phase of theTransformers comic evolution. The contact made with Cybertron, the debutof the Special Teams - seen in the UK comic as a 'Second Generation' ofTransformers - and, in particular, the final few pages of this collection, shows that things will never be the same as they were for the first coupleof years...

At 4 volumes it's still going strong 22 July 2005
By Vernon Clark Mayo - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Reprints issues #19-24, this is volume 4 of a 14 volume set, so far 4 volumes in and it just gets better as the groundwork is set, characters keep popping in, the epic feel is still there.

this is a book any fan will want though make sure you get the first 3 volumes if possible since even though they print these in 6 issue arcs it's really one huge 80 issue story and that's what makes it great, it spans the universe, battles are huge, the stakes high and it's a hell of a ride.

i have been a fan since since they first came on tv and never got a chance to read them but thanks to these trades i have been able to correct that, the movie that is supposed to be due out in 2007 is what spurred me on to buy them again, i had worried about finding old issues since they can be $10 or more for a single issue, but i found these books, now i can follow the whole story.

if your a fan then get them, no question, if your not a fan these will make you one, it has action, a great story, larger than life battles, giant robots fighting for the sake of the galaxy..there is a reason it's held strong for over 20 years.
