Not exactly Prime, but Prime enough, 9 May 2009

It's amazing how many Prime's will be released for a line these days, this is the 5th or more Prime in the Animated line. And there are some things that haven't changed from a couple of the deluxe versions.
So on with the review:
Alt Mode: Optimus Prime's alt mode is an angled almost triangle looking mode, at least in terms of the front. It looks sleek, yet unreal. Much like the show look really.
The colours are red, black, blue and grey with small touches of yellow for the headlights and indicator lights, plus two small tabs on the back. The gun, which can be filled with water, is made to look like a turret in this mode. There are no electronics.
Not a bad mode, it's show accurate despite not having a full trailer. The wheels turn well and he's fairly light. Be sure that when he's transformed that the arms are fully slotted in or the tabs on the 'trailer' won't fully connect, causing the flaps to come off easily.
Robot Mode: A very easy transformation later and you've got a fairly show accurate Prime, well almost aside from the way the front wheels are made to fold down and join the legs. But oh well, can't be helped.
The 'trailer' becomes an axe, a large axe that isn't show accurate and has a hole in it if you remove the gun and place it in a fist.
The colours have more yellow added, not a lot, but enough while the rest of the colours are in the same places as they were in alt mode.
Articulation is pretty good, arms and legs have a full 360 degree turn point, same with the waist. The head can be turned fully around and the face plate can be moved up and down, moving it down shows Prime in the way he is the most in the show - mouth and all. While the face plate makes him look more Prime.
The axe and gun can be joined together and placed on the back to look like a kind of jet pack, and also an extra big axe. Most likely the Battle Begins Prime axe can be used for this Prime, I would say they can be.
A nice mode, show accurate, but not incredible.
So is he worth getting? Yes and no. Yes because he is fairly show accurate, he's well articulated and he is fairly light. He is also reasonable durable, but not as durable as he could be.
No because the Animated designs aren't to everyone's tastes, the axe can come apart a little too easily, the plastic feels inferior when compared to previous Transformers and he's oddly small, big box, small toy.
These Primes are best for young children for sure, but how they would hold up with a lot of rough play is a hard question to answer. Prime is fairly show accurate, but he just feels inferior in terms of his construction.
If you really want a good Animated Prime, then this one is your best bet. Just don't expect anything incredible, he's fun, but just not quite Prime.
Still he does look good, he would easily fit into a collection or make a child who enjoys Animated very happy.
Just be gentle with him.

After one day of relative light play, the toy would no longer open to full robot mode. Optimus Prime remains a turtle, his head refusing to exit the chest cavity. As well, one of his arms will not move. The boys are very disappointed.

The best Animated Optimus!, 29 Oct 2009

I've played with a lot of Optimus Prime toys, but this one is among my favourites.
It's sturdy in both modes, poseable and has a neat transformation. He even has the faceplate that slides up over his mouth.
The only real flaw is that he doesn't have his correct axe from the tv show.
