Product Description

Product Description

Inspired by 90s poetry, 80s rap and 70s disco, this work is a celebration of literary form and constitutes a commentary on the realities of late 20th-century Britain. It is also a self-portrait of a poet who sets out to pack a punch, draw a smile and warm the heart all at once.

About the Author

Patience Agbabi was born in London in 1965 and educated at Oxford and Sussex Universities. Renowned for her live performances, her poems have been broadcast on television and radio all over the world. Her work has also appeared on the London Underground and human skin. She has lectured in Creative Writing at several UK universities including Greenwich, Cardiff and Kent. In 2004 she was nominated one of the UK's Next Generation Poets.

Format:Paperback
Ms. Agbabi has been held up as one of Britain's finest, modern poets and is favoured by established insiders like Andrew Motion and Ruth Padel. I was therefore keen to read her poetry. She is competent with form but lacks content. There is no emotional depth to her work and it relies heavily on awkward wordplay. She earns a living mainly as a stand up poet and that comes across - this work would probably work on the stage, but definately not on the page. If you want a taste of interesting, engaging and powerful poetics try Jackie Kay, Anne Micheals, Sharon Olds, or the lesser known Raman Mundair or Dorothea Smartt.
