This is volume one of what is currently a two volume set of CDs on Naxos of Stokowski transcriptions of Bach compositions. This disc contains selections originally recorded with Stokowski conducting the Philadelphia Orchestra between 1927 and 1939. The selections on this disc were transferred by Mark Obert-Thorn, a man well known for his careful disc to CD transfers. All of these selections and more were transferred by Obert-Thorn for a much loved 1994 2 CD compilation on Pearl Records of Stokowski-Bach transcriptions that was considered to be the ultimate reference for this material. That compilation has long been out of print. This newer release surpasses the original on Pearl by a lot. I own a copy of the original on Pearl and in did some A-B comparisons and I find this Naxos release to be superior in every way. If you are looking for original Stokowski-Bach transcriptions with the Philadelphia Orchestra, this is the disc you must own. Someone in the Leopold Stokowski Club asked Obert-Thorn how he achieved better results all these years after the original Pearl release and he said it was due to better equipment. The price is excellent and the playing is superb. Highly recommended.
