Book Description

1 July 2011
In the thirty or more years that the Beaumont Trust has been listening to, and helping, transgender people, it has seen many changes. Not only has the distinction between male and female become blurred, but so has that between the cross-dresser and the transsexual.

At the end of the first decade of the twenty first century, we are fortunate to publish a miscellany of personal accounts and of articles by leading researchers and workers in the field.

We have used the umbrella term "trans" to be as inclusive as possible, to include most areas where gender is challenged by the conventions of gender and sex.

I really liked this book, which I discovered through a friend. The 'Trans' in the title refers to transgender, and the book explores virtually all aspects of the subject in a very up-to-date, easy-to-read style. The contents are quite varied viewed from any angle. There are chapters contributed by trans people and family members, as well as statements by professionals (psychologists, physicians, ministers, etc). This multiple perspective gives you a chance to evaluate things for yourself, which makes it of use to both members of the general public and to professionals in many fields who may lack contact with trans people. For me this book completely replaces the superficial magazine/telly way of understanding the subject. Plus, the varied writing styles made it an interesting read.
