A 'must have' for anyone about to embark on this fantastic journey. The money facts and advice are particularly useful - both for Russia and China - costs, tipping and in China, bargaining. In the back of the book there's a comprehensive, but not too lengthy, glossary of useful words and phrases, numbers, times, days and basic emergency words in both languages. There is just the right amount of historical content - half a page on the Decembrist Movement for instance, within the chapter on Irkutsk and interesting detail about the history of the railway. One word of warning: Russia, especially, is changing so rapidly that some of the information, such as where to stay, is out of date. (I travelled in Sept. 2005). The Lonely Planet Guide needs to be regularly updated. However, with good maps, pictures and well organised chapters, I found this book a most useful preparation for my journey, a good travelling companion and a nice souvenir to keep.
