About the Author

Bryn Thomas was born in Zimbabwe, where he grew up on a farm. Since graduating from Durham University with a degree in anthropology, his travels have included a Saharan journey in a car he built himself, a solo 2500km cycle ride through the Andes, more than a dozen Himalayan treks and 50,000km of rail travel. The first edition of this book, shortlisted for the Thomas Cook Travel & Guide Book Awards, was the result of several trips on the Trans-Siberian and six months in the old British Library Reading Room. Subsequent publications have included Trekking in the Annapurna Region, also from Trailblazer, and guides to India and Britain for Lonely Planet. In 1991 he set up Trailblazer, to produce the series of route guides for adventurous travellers that has now grown to over 40 titles.
Anna Cohen Kaminski updated the 9th edition of this book. She was born in Moscow and experienced a Communist childhood before her family moved to the West. Though she has travelled on five continents since earning her Bachelor's degree in Comparative American Studies at the University of Warwick, this is only the second time she has properly explored the country of her birth from end to end. Anna also writes for Lonely Planet and Rough Guides, covering destinations as diverse as Chile, Peru, Colombia, Jamaica and Sweden. In between travels she calls Cambridge,England, home.

Very useful. Only at the planning stages so far but the book is full of great tips and ideas. It's up-to-date which helps a lot as many other similar guide books are several years old.
I particularly like the tremendous detail about booking tickets and even gives diagrams of the carriages and recommendations of where to sit/sleep!
Is helping to make the trip seem more of a reality...definitely worth buying.

Of immense help on out Trans-siberian rail trip from Moscow to Beijng. Make sure you take some meals with you as the food on the train is diabolical if you get the old russian resturant car.
