A superbly interesting book from Lady Fortescue covering life in France at the beginning of WWII. I found it absolutely fascinating as well as thought provoking, as I had read nothing of life in France at the beginning of the War. It includes heart rending snippets such as the story about a Frenchman marching off to war clutching his tiny baby, as his wife had just died and there was no one with whom he could leave the baby. The story then moves on to Lady Fortescue's dash back to the UK (leaving France at the same time that the troops were being pulled off at Dunkirk) and part of her subsequent life back in the UK.
