2.0 out of 5 stars Too contrived, too long, 7 Nov 2002
By A Customer
Ever since Rudopf Hess turned up in Scotland there have been non-fiction books, novels and documentaries about British fascists and quasi-fascists. Disappointingly this novel fails to come up with any new ideas on the subject. The cover claims that the book is as exciting as 'Fatherland', but that thriller was sustained by a genuinely interesting premise and setting (a Nazi-occupied Britain twenty-five years on). Sadly, this novel is not. There are also too many implausibilities, not least the 'deal' that kicks off the action. Finally it suffers from excessive length. A thriller has to VERY good to sustain interest over 600+ pages.

No No No No No!
Seriously, No.

Guy Walters has unfortunately created characters that seem to have stepped out of a 1930s Boy's Own ripping yarn. And I'm not being generous here. The dialogue is poor and the people in this book are drawn very poorly.
Calling them two-dimensional would be over-stating it.

If you really want such chisel-jawed heroes -- then you're better off with the original, someone like John Buchan's Richard Hannay.

It is a shame this book is so poor, because Walters has some interesting ideas, but just can't make them work for him and us in the pages of a novel.

If you want a good novel of 'Nazis-in-Britain' then the best by far is Len Deighton's masterful SS-GB, which has the lot: betrayal, plots-within-plots, romance, the SS, and A-Bombs - and who could want more than that?

Do yourself a Big Favour -- give it a miss. If you do read it -- you have been warned....

3.0 out of 5 stars 2 1/2 Stars -- Too Slow-Moving And Not Enough Action!, 5 Jun 2008
By bobbewig (New Jersey, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Traitor (Paperback)
The Traitor has an interesting plot -- A British secret agent is captured by the Nazis and, in a decision some considered to be treason, acts out of love and strikes a bargain with his captors. The deal is that in return for his wife who is interned in a concentration camp, the agent agrees to lead a clandestine unit of the SS called the British Free Corps. However, while the author has created an interesting premise and credible characters, the plot didn't move along at a brisk enough pace and the amount of action was somewhat limited for my taste. Further, Walters got too bogged down in describing the motivations for what seemed like every move and thought of the main character. All in all, I'd rate The Traitor as "fair." It is not a bad book; it's just not a book I'd recommend that you rush out to read.
