I like Duncan Falconer's books and his SBS operative, Stratton - very much in the McNab and Ryan space and generally as good, if not better.
But "Traitor" is a strange one, a cliché ridden bunch of mercenaries take over an oil rig and some dubious plotting has Stratton and a bunch of intelligence boffins take on the rescue task when the original strike team is.....stranded. And the boffins are somewhat cliché ridden too.
The action then moves onto Russia as Stratton moves to remove a British traitor and recover some top secret equipment.
I have genuinely enjoyed all of Falconer's books, but this one is perhaps his weakest effort. The characters, plot and some of the scenes are just way too far over the top, to the degree that they are almost silly. There is a scene where Stratton is challenged to 'a fight to the death' - wholly inappropriate, silly and a little typical of many things in this book. It's also odd that there is a bit of a style change from the author, less McNab and more over the top Matthew Reilly type stuff. I hope Duncan Falconer gets back to his normal style as this one just did not hit the mark at all for me, my three star rating is ever so slightly generous.
