Product Description

Product Description

Recalling the end of the steam era of Britain's railways and the early years of nationalization, this is the final book from the partnership of David St John Thomas and Patrick Whitehouse, the latter having died in 1993. Taking its name from a 1940s text which opened the eyes of a new generation of enthusiasts, it features 32 paintings, many of them previously unpublished, by the railway artist Philip Hawkins, as well as many examples of the work of leading railway photographers.

About the Author

Patrick Whitehouse was dedicated to railway preservation, his death in 1993 brought to an end a great writing partnership which sold more than a million books. David St John Thomas was the founder of David & Charles and its chairman until 1990. He lives in Nairn, Scotland. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

The illustrations are so beautifully produced and well chosen. For my generation it recalls holidays and travels and one smells again smoke and steam, hears once more those clacketing sounds as one sped to the sea or perhaps to a loved Grandparent. The articles take one about the country again with beguiling memories and interesting information. Not just the steam junkie will relish this lovely book, all who remember or wish they had known the later years of steam rail travel will be delighted. A book to pick up any time and open at any page.
