Review

If you are going to train your own working spaniel - especially if it is to be your first - get Janet Menzies' invaluable book and read it from start to finish first. --The Field

The author's knowledge and experience at the highest level of the discipline comes across clearly in the detailed guidance and easy-to-follow explanations. --Shooting Times

She [the author] is very good at recognising that all dogs are different and that you need to be aware of your own dogs' abilities. I like the fact that she emphasizes that when things start to go wrong, go back to basics and make sure that they are solid before pushing ahead. Each chapter has a useful troubleshooting section which covers problems that may arise. The book is well illustrated with colour photos. I thought it was an interesting book and should be very useful to those training their spaniels for the field. --Dog Training Weekly

Janet Menzies is a very experienced gundog trainer but unlike some other experts she can see things from the novice's point of view, covering many of the little worries that are often neglected while remaining absolutely sound on the basic principles. And her troubleshooting tips at the end of each chapter are welcome. She is also well aware of the difficulties which face today's gundog trainer in an increasingly urbanised world and has thoughtfully included a valuable chapter on the urban gundog, showing that you can have a working spaniel in the city. If you are thinking of training a spaniel this book really is worth reading.' --BASC Shooting and Conservation

While focussing on cockers and springers there is also plenty of information on rarer breeds, like clumbers and Brittanys. It is a thorough guide to getting the best from your spaniel and will be of great use to the existing or wannabe owner. --Shooting Gazette

There are lots of books about training gun dogs. Many of them very out of date in approach. This is thoroughly up to date published in 2010. It's an excellent book for training the unique nature of the spaniel - be it springer, cocker or one of the many others. Takes you through from early puppy lessons such as sit and heel through to being ready for the field. The author is entertaining and knowledgable although I found her very subtly dismissive of those that are not following the 'proper' route to Gundog training (our spaniel has to serve as family pet as well and she covers this but in a slightly dismissive way). But that's my only criticism of an otherwise really good manual for training your dog for field work.

This book is written well with good instructions accompanied by valid reasoning and examples.
So far it has been very useful, although I wish it gave a little more advice for people looking to purchase a working spaniel for the first time but once the puppy has been selected this is a valuable asset.
Janet is well respected and has some very good mentors so this book is a good way of gaining knowledge from the top trainers in the UK.

Bought the other half a working Cocker Spaniel along with this book. I am a Working Retriever Person myself, so limited knowledge and experience with anything with floppy ears. After being given a pages by page brief on every chapter, i can now see why he does what he does and that it was worth getting his champion line. Still a pain when you are trying to watch the TV but he is only 15weeks.

Well worth the money and read, for all those who think they know nothing or a lot. Would also recomend using THE WORKING COCKER - Peter Jones. The two go well together.

So far, so good. This is the most useful puppy and dog training book I've seen so far. While we've got a spaniel as a pet rather than just to work the methods work. Read more
