Product Description

Product Description

Warning: Using this book could be hazardous to your ego! The slogans it contains are designed to awaken the heart and cultivate love and kindness toward others. They are revolutionary in that practicing them fosters abandonment of personal territory in relating to others and in understanding the world as it is. The fifty-nine provocative slogans presented here—each with a commentary by the Tibetan meditation master Chögyam Trungpa—have been used by Tibetan Buddhists for eight centuries, to help meditation students remember and focus on important principles and practices of mind training. They emphasize meeting the ordinary situations of life with intelligence and compassion under all circumstances.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book changes minds., 2 July 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Training the Mind: And Cultivating Loving-Kindness (Paperback)
This book does change lives. Trungpa Rinpoche explains the Lo Jong slogans (a form of mind training designed to increase universal compassion and diminish unenlightened self interest and ego directed activity) in a pithy essential manner.

The slogans themselves are enigmatic and on one day can shine with clarity and significance and on another make as much sense as Bush in the Whitehouse.

Used in conjunction with Pema Chodron's "Start Where You Are" the slogans and their explanations provide a profound and meaningful framework with which to live your life.

For me personally, this book which I first read about four years ago (and continue to read every day) has helped me to get through post teenage depression (retrospectively), twentysomething angst and now thirtysomething playfulness.

The simple point of the book is to breathe in what is wrong with your situation and breathe out (or give away) all that is delightful. As flakey as this sounds, it really does loosen your grip on all the rubbish that floats around in your head and heart.

To cap it all off, it's a short book too, so you can read it, reflect on it, digest it and practise it and then get on with your life.

If you have any sympathy with Buddhist practise or philosophy this book will speak directly to you. If you don't, I think its basic truths will resonate with you whatever your belief system.

And you can always send it back if it just reads like hippy nonsense!

5.0 out of 5 stars A CLEAR AND CRISP READING, 11 Jun 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Training the Mind: And Cultivating Loving-Kindness (Paperback)
Bringing Buddhist teachings to a western mind is no easy task. I find that the material in this book clearly allows one to understand Dharma in a crisp and refreshing light. The ability to apply this to the western life is well stated.
