A powerhouse performance by Denzel Washington fuels Training Day, a brutal urban police drama in which a rookie narcotics cop learns the hard way that even good cops can go very, very bad. Washington plays veteran detective Alonzo Harris, a self-proclaimed "wolf among wolves", eager to teach his rookie partner Jake (Ethan Hawke) that normal rules don't apply on the mean streets of Los Angeles. Caught in a web of deception, Jake watches with escalating horror as Alonzo uses his badge (and the support of his superiors) to justify a self-righteous policy of corruption.

In stark contrast to most of his previous work, Washington unleashes his dark side with fearlessness and fury, and the result is excellence without compromise. Director Antoine Fuqua (The Replacement Killers) won't score any points for subtlety, but gritty details (including actual LA gang members as extras) and Hawke's finely tuned performance are perfectly matched to Washington's frightening volatility. --Jeff Shannon,

On the DVD: Training Day's special features include an HBO documentary which actually provides some insight into the structure of the film rather than simply adding glitz and glamour. Antoine Fuqua's feature commentary is intimate, suggesting his heart and soul went into this movie. The extra scenes also add to the enjoyment of the movie, the only disappointment being that there is no additional commentary to explain the cuts. The alternative ending ties up a few of the loose ends which are left at the close of the theatrical release. Out of the two music videos it is Pharoahe Monch's "Got You" that fits in best with the style of the film, having a much bassier street-level feel than Nelly's "#1" chart-friendly hip-hop. The Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack allows you to feel like you're pumping out the beats from your BMW and the 2.35:1 widescreen is a slick as Denzel Washington's gun moves. --Nikki Disney

Product Description

Police corruption thriller featuring an Oscar-winning performance from Denzel Washington. Rookie cop Jake Hoyt (Ethan Hawke) has been newly assigned to an elite narcotics unit and is due to spend his first day on the job with veteran detective Alonzo Harris (Washington). As the day passes, and after dealing with street thugs and drug tycoons, Hoyt begins to suspect that Harris might have become corrupted by the job. When Harris then murders criminal kingpin Roger (Scott Glenn) and tries to get the act pinned on Hoyt, the young cop realises that he has no choice but to confront Harris himself.

4.0 out of 5 stars a good film - a great performance **** 16 Jun 2002
By Figroll
Sitting down to watch this film, i had no idea what to expect, i hadnt read any reviews and didnt know any of the plot details but I quickly began to enjoy the ride. Training day tells the story of Ethan hawk (a young cop who wants to climb the ranks) who teams up with seasoned cop (washington) who wants to get the freshfaced cop a feel of life on the streets.
From the very early scenes, washington makes an impact, creating a character who is believable but at the same time a little on the edge. Hawk also turns in a very good performance, playing a "scared of the consequences" role similar to the one he played in (gattaca). This film isnt scared to deal with strong issues and the film is all the better for it.
Training day has many twist and turns to keeps you guessing until the very end, and although the ending isnt quite up to the standard of the rest of the film, this is still a very well made and well constructed film in which washington gives one of his finest performances.

4.0 out of 5 stars Narcotics effect your... ooh! tree monkeys. 31 Mar 2005
By T. Ridd
This film follows a new officer of the narcotics division of a police force. Although, when he gets offered some 'narcotics' by his superior officer, he starts to question the seriousness of his boss. All-in-all, the whole film encompasses a serious issue, and allows people like us to see the consequences. The disk lacks extras, but doesn't seem to matter when you realise it is a really decent watch. Also, the 'office' is the koolest thing I've ever seen.. you'll know what I mean when you watch the film.

3.0 out of 5 stars Could have been a Classic!!!! 11 Jun 2007
By nmollo VINE VOICE
"Training Day" is certainly an attention grabber. The first hour is impressive, assured and exciting. The acting is excellent. Then in the last reel it all falls apart rather dramatically.

As usual for Hollywood fodder the two lead actors have a final predictable confrontation resulting in the Motion Picture losing all the credibility it had so carefully constructed in previous reels.

Punch-ups ensue that never result in any of the protagonists getting seriously hurt and of course the villain leaves our hero alive, James Bond style. Why? Where is the logic? How could a film that carefully constructs a real, gritty world then leap so willingly into the realm of action cliché?

Ridiculous crowd direction, such as extras standing directly in the line of fire, without a care in the world! Predictable pontificating in a shoot out situation.

The film worked so well to a point and then it was all thrown away. What a shame. This could have been a classic! The most engaging scene was the near shooting in a gangland bathtub.

4.0 out of 5 stars Training Day DVD 21 July 2002
After all the post-Oscar hype, its hard to watch this movie without a teensie bit of expectation. But after 10 minutes of the feature running, any doubts you have will be blown away. And to think this was helmed by the same guy who brought us the dire `Replacement Killers`. Denzel is absolutely superb as the corrupt narcotics cop, without a doubt deserving the best actor Oscar. If you can ignore a decidedly dodgy ending, then this will be the best cop thriller you will have seen for years. As for the DVD, its a case of good , but not great! The commentary by director Antoine Fuqua (its pronounced differently than its spelled fortunately) is average at best, never really bringing any interesting facts or anecdotes up. How cool would a Denzel commentary track have been (especially in light of his Oscar triumph). Definitely a missed opportunity. The rest of the DVD extras are your standard HBO making of` featurette, trailers and rap music videos. Not really exciting stuff. So, on the whole a fantastic movie, let down by an average DVD. Hopefully Warner will release an `Oscar Special Edition` soon that will do the fab film justice.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must watch! 23 July 2007
By Rutwij
I saw this film on the telly and immediately decided that it needed to be included in my library!
The film is a stunning combination of splendid performances from the leading and supporting actors, great direction and slick production values.
Ethan Hawke (who was so brilliant in Gattaca) plays rookie narcotics cop and this film takes us through his first day in his new role. His superior Denzel Washington is a multi-decorated street-wise cop who has a seemingly unorthodox work style which constantly pushes and tests Hawke.
Hawke slowly learns about the dark side of the city streets and the police system.
The performances are absolutely stellar, and Washington deservedly won an Academy Award for his role. Hawke is very good as rookie Hoyt. The rest of the cast appear in small supporting roles, but help construct a very believable picture of LA.
If you haven't already seen this film, get it on DVD - it is one you'll like to view a few times.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic 13 Dec 2006
Training Day came recommended to me by a friend of mine but he doesn't have a very good track record when it comes to recommending films. Maybe it's just me being fussy because I can be critical of films more often than not. However, not so with Training Day. This movie is an absolute gem - it's gripping, fast paced, has a wonderful script and some truly fantastic performances by both Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke. Training Day is a tense and gritty thriller that may lack subtlety but more than makes up for it in all other areas. I enjoyed this film from start to finish and it has cemented itself as one of my most favourite films and one of the best films I have seen in recent years.
