5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting 26 Dec 2010
By M. Marikar VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This book has a huge amount of information and deals with so many aspects of how your brain works and training your brain, with sections on music, creativity, positive thinking, pregnancy, eating habits and lots more. It's a book that you can just dip into and read here and there, taking a few tips away each time about improving your brain power, or someone could read it in a more organised way but I have prefered the more random approach. It also has puzzles in the back to practise, which is a highlight for me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kindle version 19 Jan 2013
By Terry
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
There is a lot of useful and interesting information in this book, and it gives a good overview of the current thinking. There are some problems with the Kindle version however.

Anyone who's ever read a 'for Dummies' will know what to expect from the layout. It works well enough in the physical book, but on the evidence here it is obvious that the publishers have not taken enough care to translate the original features to the Kindle version.

The first problem is the sidebars of the paperback version are here incorporated into the body of the text, sometimes interrupting the flow of the main text. I think the publishers would have done better to have had the book rewritten to aid the flow of information.

Another problem is the inclusion of sudoku and wordsearch puzzles, which clearly cannot be completed on the Kindle screen. The puzzles are then repeated, in their completed state, as answers at the back of the book. I wasn't too put out, but a publisher of their standing could've made a bigger effort to address the needs of ebook readers.

A general problem with all of these Dummies books, whether digital or otherwise, is the constant referencing of earlier or later chapters, which, for me at least, breaks up the flow of the text. I would suggest some sort of shorthand bracketed convention which is less intrusive.

Overall, to finish on a positive, I did learn a few things that I could do differently to keep my brain healthy. A worthwhile read, it's not unreadable on the Kindle, but I suggest you stick to the paperback.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and useful 27 May 2011
By Damaskcat HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I like the For Dummies series because they do what they say - make complex subjects simple. They are not meant to be the last word on any subject but they are meant to start you off and to be a useful one volume reference book on the subjects they cover.

This book uses the normal For Dummies format which means it is very easy to pick and choose which bit you want to read next or which section you find most useful in your particular case.

I found the first chapter on how the brain works - simplified of course - interesting though if you've read any of the popular science books on the brain you may want to skip this section as you probably already know most of it.

Some might think this book is only aimed at the older person trying to keep their brain in trim but there are sections on helping children to train their brains as well. Brains can be trained at any age. If you want to develop your short term memory there are suggestions for how to do this just as there are for long term memory development.

There are sections in the book about helping to keep your brain - and body - healthy which are mainly common sense - good diet, enough sleep and exercise and freedom from too much stress. Even if you know this information it's still useful to have it to hand.

There are two chapters - about forty pages - of puzzles of all descriptions including Sudoku for the reader to practice on, with the solutions supplied at the end of the book. As with all the For Dummies series there is a comprehensive contents list and index.

This is a useful book if you think your brain might be getting lazy. It isn't a book necessarily to read from cover to cover - more one to dip into in idle moments but useful for all that.
