Some singles which kind of lit up the late seventies and very early eighties ('Let's Build A Car', 'Read About Seymour', 'Real Shocks', 'Dresden Style') some other stuff, some wierd stuff. And some wierder stuff.
You had to love them. They recorded in their bedrooms and garages. They listed vacuum cleaner, volkswagen and toys as recording instruments. Writer/singer/guitarist Nikki Mattress/Sudden sounded a bit like Bolan here and there, (but they never sounded like anyone else really.) The Swell Maps were never afraid to experiment with anything.
They didn't go to a record company - just released their records on their own label. And it worked. Novelty act they were not.
For a time they made anything seem possible. Check out 'Doctor At C(ake)' for a bit of loose p(h)unk.
Sometimes a bit scary ('Big Maz In The Country', 'The Graveyard Shift', 'Blues No. 2: Beatle Bonfire'), sometimes wonderfully scrappy ('Doomette', 'Then Poland'), sometimes really catchy (the aforementioned singles). Usually great songs and tunes. And some wonderful atmospheric piano pieces from Epic Soundtracks.
This is a great compilation which ties up a few loose ends.
All their work is recommended.
