Product Description

Asian News Network
A Beauty-and-the-Beast storyline against the backdrop of Noughties
Japan...Train Man became a modern-day myth.

Product Description
This is a true story of love for the internet generation - the international bestseller that sold over a million copies. This wonderfully unique book from Japan derives from a series of postings over a three-month period to a particularly computer-geeky thread of 2 Channel, the world's largest anonymous Message Board. The events all took place in Tokyo. One day a shy otaku computer geek mentioned on the message forum how he had met a girl on a subway train. As things developed he continued to post updates to the message board. He gained the nickname 'Train Man'. With each update from bashful Train Man, his fellow correspondents throw in own colourful speculations, boyish encouragements, tongue-in-cheek warnings, and fabulously inventive ascii text drawings. Train Man tries to take on board their comments as events unfold. Eventually he finds love with the girl, Hermes, and reveals to her the entire history of the thread. The true identity of Train Man remains a closely guarded secret.

3.0 out of 5 stars The message board thread from which Densha Otoko was created., 29 Oct 2008
By M. grandidge "Michael" (Lancashire, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The book is a translated version of the original message board thread from which Densha Otoko (Train Man) was created. It is the bare outline of the tv series. There is a lot in the television series that is not in this book. I think the real genius is from whoever wrote the screenplay for the Japanese television version of Densha Otoko. The book is messages left by the other posters on the Internet message board. It was good but I was a little disappointed it did not have me laughing and crying like the televison series did (check out Youtube for clips).

5.0 out of 5 stars Charming, 6 April 2007
By Mr. Andrew Howat (Newcastle, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The tale of a modern day 'otaku' (Japanese for fanboy/geek), who stood up to a drunk who was harassing a woman on a train, and the geek's attempts to get the girl.

It has spawned a TV show, a movie, and countless manga adaptations, and is truly legendary in modern Japanese culture, despite being supposedly a true story. Whatever it's origins - it is a funny and heart-warming tale of faltering love from the perspective of an inexperienced guy.

I suspect this will be more popular than the other perennial Japanese favourite, Socrates in Love - which I'd also recommend readers to check out.

Personally though, I bought this, and then have bought 2 other copies for my girlfriend, and my best mate, and recommended the book to countless others. Buy it, you really won't regret it.
