4.0 out of 5 stars Beneath the peaks 18 Jun 2012

Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Latest Doctor Who audio story in the current run that feature Tom Baker as the Doctor and Louise Jameson as his companion Leela.

This is the fifth in a series, but it does stand entirely on it's own. Thus casual listeners would be able to get into without having heard the earlier ones.

It's complete on one cd, and runs for two episodes of just over twenty five minutes in length [approx].

This one is the first of a two part story, though, and it ends on a cliffhanger which leads into the next one Oseidon Adventure, The (Doctor Who: The Fourth Doctor Adventures).

The story sees the Doctor and Leela visit Derbyshire in 1979. In an area that has a legend about a great white worm that comes our out of the rocks and eats animals. And occasionally humans.

Quickly caught up in a manhunt, the time travellers soon find bigger things are going on here. For an old enemy of the Doctor's is also in the area. They are hunting the worm as well. And the stakes are suddenly much higher....

As with all the other stories in this run the two leads are great and some of their dialogue is absolutely superb. The recreation of the style of Doctor Who at the time is as well, thanks to good music and sound design. And there are some nice little touches to create the period which should bring a smile to the face of anyone who lived through the 1970's.

This story is a rather odd mix of styles, though, and never the out and out horror one that the cover and the description might imply. The first episode, after a great start, does rather get sidetracked with a long introduction for an eccentric supporting character that does come close to getting a bit silly.

Yet there are twists and turns galore here and the story will constantly surprise you as it goes along.

The old enemy [no spoilers but anyone not wanting to know should avoid looking at the cover of the box and the cast list on the back] is played by the original actor, and they do a superb job of returning to a part they first played decades before.

As mentioned this is the start of a longer story, and that means it ends on a big cliffhanger and you will need to hear the the next release in this run to find what happens next.

So this isn't quite perfect and not the best of this run so far but there's still a lot to like about it and it's well worth a listen.

The trailer for the aforementioned next story can be found on track on the cd right after the end of part two.

And fifteen minutes [approx] of interviews with cast and crew are on the tracks after that.

A great story, which features some many classic moments that featured throughout Tom bakers era as the doctor
A brilliant story, which features the return of the master, as played by Geoffrey beavers. He is great in the story, but he is only used minimal throughout the story, which is how I think the master is best played.
Tom baked and louise Jameson are brilliant in this story, it is really like being back in 1977 all over again.
I would recommended this to all doctor who fans. To fans of the classic series and also fans of the new series. Buy this audio and enjoy a great story

4.0 out of 5 stars The first season finale begins for the Fourth Doctor Adventures! 23 July 2012
By John Keegan - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I went into this audiodrama with practically no expectations, and so I was shocked to discover that it was the first part of a two-part finale for the "first season" of the Fourth Doctor Adventures. Even more so, the title is quite innocuous, given where the story goes and how it ties into the larger context of the Fourth Doctor era.

I could get into those details, but to be honest, it's far more fun to allow new listeners to experience the revelations for themselves. I know it elevated my listening experience tremendously! I love it when stories of seemingly small scale turn out to be far more meaningful, especially when the title doesn't tell you what is going to happen. (Unlike, say, "Energy of the Daleks", or most of the titles for the majority of Classic Who serials!)

The titular trail of a white worm is discovered by the Doctor and Leela within the opening seconds of the story, and things take a variety of twists and turns from there. The writing is clever enough that I thought it was going to follow a couple different genre tropes before it finally zeroed in on the real target. It also doesn't beat the audience over the head with a message or two-dimensional characterization, which has unfortunately been all too common with Leela since her arrival.

I would talk about the strength of the guest cast, but since it would represent a massive spoiler, I don't want to ruin the surprise. Similarly, I can't really discuss the implications to the overall Whovian continuity. What I can say is that the production team did an excellent job of weaving this story into the existing material, and it makes a great deal of sense for these events to fit into this moment in the Fourth Doctor timeline.

Even if some of the other Fourth Doctor Adventures didn't quite work for me, I would wholeheartedly recommend this one to fans of the classic run. For all intent purposes, this "season finale" stands pretty much on its own, and this is a very good beginning to the story.
