Book Description

St Mary’s is back and is facing a battle to survive in this, the fourth instalment of the Chronicles.

Max and Leon are re-united and looking forward to a peaceful lifetime together. But, sadly, they don’t even make it to lunchtime.

The action races from 17th century London to Ancient Egypt and from Pompeii to 14th century Southwark as they’re pursued up and down the timeline, playing a perilous game of hide and seek until they’re finally forced to take refuge at St Mary’s – where new dangers await them.

As usual, there are plenty of moments of humour, but the final, desperate, Battle of St Mary’s is in grim earnest. Overwhelmed and outnumbered and with the building crashing down around them, how can St Mary’s possibly survive?

So, make sure the tea’s good and strong…

About the Author

Jodi Taylor, International Woman of Mystery, spent some time working undercover for North Yorkshire County Library Service. Heavily disguised as the world's most incompetent Facilities Manager she shifted dead dogs, fell out of mobile libraries, and spent far too much time in the gents' toilets. The idea to re-write history first came to her while studying history A' level at an evening class. Just One Damned Thing After Another is her first novel and was originally self-published on ebook where it was downloaded by more than 60,000 readers on Amazon. <iframe src="//www.youtube.com/embed/QK21zOiJVgo?rel=0" style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" width="560" height="315" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen=">

More About the Author

Jodi Taylor (who also writes as Isabella Barclay) is, and always has been, a History Nut. Her disinclination to get out of bed for anything after 1485 can only be overcome by massive amounts of chocolate, and sometimes, if it's raining, not even then.

She wanted to write a book about time-travel that was a little different, and not having a clue how difficult this would make her book to classify, went ahead and slung in elements of history, adventure, comedy, romance, tragedy and anything else she could think of. Her advice to booksellers is to buy huge numbers of her books and just put one on every shelf.

The result is the story of the St Mary's Institute of Historical Research and the nutters who work there.

In order, The Chronicles of St Mary's consist of the following titles -

Just One Damned Thing After Another
A Symphony of Echoes
A Second Chance
A Trail Through Time.
No Time Like the Past
What Could Possibly Go Wrong? will be released in August 2015 and is available for pre-order now.

Also available are three short stories -

When A Child is Born
Roman Holiday
Christmas Present.

Her first romantic novel, also available on Amazon, is entitled The Nothing Girl, and the story of Jenny and Russell is continued in the short story, Little Donkey.

Not knowing when to stop, she thought she'd try her hand at an historical romance novel as well. A Bachelor Establishment by Isabella Barclay is available for pre-order now and will be published in June 2015.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely loved it, number 5 please? 25 July 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I downloaded my pre-ordered copy on waking and finished it yesterday evening. A small inconvenience in having to work all day prevented me from finishing it sooner.

Just when you thought St Mary's couldn't get any better, Jodi Taylor ramps up the pace and quality and St Mary's book 4 has to be the best so far, (although I confess that I've said that after each of the previous books). Loose ends hinted at the end of the last book were firmly woven into a story that kept me hooked. I found myself anxiously looking at the percentage read figure at the bottom of my Kindle screen to see how much more I'd got left to read, never have I been so unwilling for a book to end.

I really envy the reviewer who, having only recently been introduced to the St Mary's series was able to run through them all, one after another, before downloading this excellent instalment. Imagine the luxury of having four, (six if you count the short stories and who could forget Mr Markham's breasts!), full novels to enjoy.

Please Jodie, when will number five be ready? If it helps the creative processes I can send vast amounts of chocolate!

5.0 out of 5 stars No no no, is this the end ? 25 July 2014

Please let there be more St Mary's, you can't end it there. I'm hoping that as a certain person is missing (I'm trying not to give any spoilers) that the tales will continue.
I agree with the previous reviewers, such a good series of books. Even now I still chuckle at the incident that will forever be known to me as the avian aggression.
St Mary's is a place I would love to work at and a group of people I would like to know.
Please Ms Taylor more chronicles !!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Slight dip in what is a great series. 9 Oct. 2014
By Jakeisthecoolest TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have said it before, but I'll say it again, the St Mary's books really are my little guilty pleasure. I have also said over and over in my reviews of the previous books in this saga that I wish Taylor would slow down and stop trying to cram so much in. Well clearly I should be careful what I wish for. This book is far better structured, with significantly improved pacing and with characters given time to develop. Unfortunately this has come at the expense of the crazy seat of the pants storytelling that, it turns out, made the previous instalments so gripping. So I apologise Ms Taylor, I clearly know nothing.
Overall a very good book, by a writer who has developed enormously, but sadly, in this case maybe not for the better.

5.0 out of 5 stars One very wild ride through time! 24 July 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A truly amazing ride that takes you all over the place and is so steadfastly St Mary's despite it all, you can't help but laugh, cry, and snort (sometimes even at the same time). I won't say anything about the actual storyline, as i firmly believe you need to read it and experience it for yourselves. all in all it is a book not to be missed, i couldn't put it down!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Trail Through Time 16 Dec. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Wow! I have read more books than I can count since getting my kindle last Christmas, some by well known authors some by newcomers, but never have I enjoyed a series as much as I've enjoyed the chronicles of st Mary's! What a wonderfully talented author, I have read all four books (so far) in the series one after the other in less than a week. Having just finished ATT, I'm suffering extreme sleep deprivation and looking forward to getting to know my family again, who have been sadly neglected during my marathon with the lovely (mostly!) folk of St Mary's. The series started off on a very high note which I did not think could possibly be bettered - how wrong can you be?! Each book is better than the last and this latest episode is fantastic. Max and Leon are people any of us would love to know, as are all their friends, and I feel as if I know them really well now. I can't wait for the next book in the series in Feb. If you haven't read any of these books, do yourself a favour and download them asap, you won't regret it. Start with the first book though, as the story of Max, Leon, St Mary's et al are developed through the series. I would haeve given this book, the best so far, a lot more stars if allowed, 5 is not enough. I recommend the series to anyone who loves a good rollicking story written with intelligence and a delicious wicked humour capable of making you roar with laughter, even in such inappropriate places as buses and trains. Thanks, Jodi, it's been an entertaining ride to say the least!

3.0 out of 5 stars Having loved the series I feel disappointed... 6 Jan. 2015
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I finally gave in and bought a Kindle copy (because the book is still not available on iBooks which in itself really irritates me) this is relevant because this means I had to read it on Kindle Cloud sitting at my computer (my backside aching from sitting here for hours - this probably has affected how I feel about the story). I've enjoyed all the other books in the series and I was particularly captivated by how the author ended the last book. That was a sheer drop cliff hanger if ever... If you've enjoyed all the other stories and you just love a good plot with a lot of action (and don't mind if Max or someone is always getting injured every other page) and you're not really bothered about the romance then you'll probably love it. I can understand why others have given it five stars, but for me it's a three star. It's OK...I can not see myself reading it a second time let alone raving as I did over the first three books. I'm glad I read it so i know what happened and I'll probably buy the next book (but I may not...depending on how much my current mood is associated with 'butt in chair too long syndrome' or my feeling disappointed.

Spoil alert:

The main reason I feel disappointed - I was hoping (and expecting) to spend a lot of time (in book 4) with Maxwell and Leon getting to know each other (regardless of what else was happening), but they don't actually spend much of the book together. This really irritates me after the touching last chapter in the last book (which I wanted more of, but you don't actually get). If you're not a romance fan then this won't be an issue, but it is for me. As other reviewers have noted, the sex scene at the end is rather incongruous. I don't know why she put it in. Something sweet and tender like the opening scene (without the sex scene playing out from Max's perspective) would have had more emotional impact.
