5.0 out of 5 stars Harmony & Tragedy Perfected 13 Jun 2009
Format:Audio CD
The upbeat melodies and brilliant harmonies of the Louvins contrast with the desparately sad lyrics of most of the songs - like a sweet & sour dish. While few broadcasters would transmit Knoxville Girl, here we have this traditional song which apparently has origins in Wexford. Mary of the Wild Moor remains a guaranteed tear-jerker in this Country version. Each song adds to the feeling of sadness, so take great care who you choose to share this brilliant collection with. The recordngs may have been made in 1956, 57 & 58, but this is my record of the year!

5.0 out of 5 stars includes the scariest song ever recorded! 26 May 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This is a great country album, but I thought I'd point out that "Knoxville Girl" is the scariest song ever recorded -- in part bacause the violence in it is so unexpected and so thoroughly meaningless. Modern heavy metal and serial killer movies have nothing on this song! Creepy!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Only improves with age. 20 Nov 2002
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
First heard Tragic Songs of Life when I was about 6. Such are the melodies, they haunted me all my life. Every track is poignant and entices you to listen closer as the story unfolds.
Aptly named, the sadness of the lyrics are thought provoking.
But, the melodies have, like all great music, that 'something' that when you next hear them, you feel you have known them all your life.
Am desperate to obtain this alubm on CD as at present have it on vinyl.

5.0 out of 5 stars My dad went ballistic! 20 Mar 2002
By JLM - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
My dad had been searching for ANYTHING by these guys, having loved them since he was a kid. I found this CD at a local CD store and bought it for him. I often joke this was when I became "Daddy's favorite." There were so many songs on here that he had been looking for, and several he didn't know the Louvin Bros had recorded! This is a great album. It piqued my interest in bluegrass and made me a fan for life!
