Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The Crimea have deservedly garnered much fuss with singles like "Lottery Winners On Acid" and "White Russian Galaxy"--tracks which have shown them more than capable of delivering catchy pop rock with a subtle retro-trendy twist. The real mark of a new band though lies in their capacity to create a larger entire listening experience – i.e. a debut album. For Tragedy Rocks, vocalist Davey Macmanus & Co have given it their best shot. On first listen there’s a sense of gutsy bravado underlying the songs that lives up to the promise of their hit singles, though on closer inspection the songs disappear into vapidity. The problem seems to lie in the band’s inability to suspend disbelief over repeated listens. Unlike the outfit they’ve been most compared to, The Flaming Lips, The Crimea just don’t offer the requisite drama and attitude. Their posturing seems like exactly that – posturing, all trousers and no action. Despite a genuine effort and some arresting moments, Tragedy Rocks simply fails to convince. --Paul Sullivan

CD Description

'Tragedy Rocks' is the debut album from former Crocketts frontman Davey Macmanus' new band, The Crimea. Combining Davey's abstract poetry with an intense, rocky yet psychedelic sound that brings to mind both The Pixies and The Flaming Lips. Includes the singles 'White Russian Galaxy', 'Baby Boom' and 'Lottery Winners On Acid'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, 20 Oct 2005

Featuring ex members of the crockets this is everything you would have hoped they'd become. Often played by John Peel, this album shows why. Great melodies and catchy tunes yet at times dark and disturbing. One of the albums of 2005.

5.0 out of 5 stars Astounding, 17 Oct 2005
This is a a fantastic band, the whole album is a beautiful soundscape of melodic, crazy, idiosyncratic songs. Within the great indie circus they will be very significant for years to come. Buy it now!

5.0 out of 5 stars Euphoric Tragedy, 5 Feb 2006
By A Customer
It has been a long wait comrades...

The power, depth, pain and sheer scope of these ten tracks can not be overpraised. Davey Macmanus is a man possessed with a frightening desire for honesty and the gift of poetry that is capable of melting your spine. His lyrics speak of bleak brutality and gaping vulnerability beautifully wrapped by Johnny Marr/Bernard Butler-esque guitar from the frighteningly great Andy Norton. The layers of sound make the Flaming Lips seem tissue thin and the fragility renders Coldplay thick with cliche and monied baggage. These guys pick up the mantle of early Suede, take us on the road that the Manics lost too early and leave the listener in a place it is impossible to get home from. If you like being lost, jump in while there's still room...
