Bought these for Bonfire night for the kids but after opening the pack to see they use a wire frame (99% bio-degradeable??) decided not to use. Read up on news websites that this type can do harm to livestock when they land in fields and are consumed by animals. The wire becomes lodged in their windpipe and can cause severe injury or death according to bbc website as well as the national farmers union. They may be a magical experience for kids but eventually they land somewhere and have to be dealt with. Please read up on them before you buy. I'm sure you kids would be crushed if they found out one of their lanterns had led to the death of an animal....mine definitely would.

Absolute crap. Didn't even take off the ground. And when they did take off the wick that you light just falls off and continues to burn where ever it lands. Normally in a bush, or in someone else's garden. Quite dangerous .

I bought a set of these lanterns to try out last bonfire night. Of the 10 I received, I attempted to light 4. In all 4 cases the flame burnt a hole in the lantern well before it was ready to take off. There seems to be a bit of a design flaw here because the edges of the lantern are so close to the flame that there is no way to prevent them from getting burnt.

Perhaps I was unlucky and didn't get the best batch of lanterns. Especially as some of the previous reviewers seemed to get along with these fine. In any case, I tried a different company's lanterns and had far more success. I would avoid this make.

Please consider the impact on local wildlife when using these! Even the RSPCA advises against them:

Unless you live in the middle of nowhere, these things are just not safe.

Metal components so, even within the parameters of Chinese lanterns, these don't deserve an ECO description.

Hard to launch - the block of wax fuel is heavy, so the lanterns take much too long to generate enough heat to fly.

If you care about wildlife and the countryside please do not buy these or any other Chinese Lanterns. This morning it was reported that a barn owl was killed entangled in one of these vile things. Amazon should be more responsible than to promote Chinese Lanterns - and before the usual lame excuse about "they carry safety instructions" is trotted out; only the wind decides which way to launch these naked flames over the many thatched cottages in our village and my livestock and the wildlife here do not read

I bought these lanterns as we lost our daughter earlier in the year so thought it would be a nice tribute to write on the lanterns and send them to the sky Christmas and New Year.
What a let down! Was pleased at how quickly they arrived but the quality was not good several of them wouldn't open or had holes in, when we did manage to light some of them they didn't 'take off' just hovered over the grass then dropped and burnt!" got stuck in a tree and the firelighter fell on the ground, one went under a van and the one that looked promising began going up then caught fire!
Very dangerous and such a let down!
Will NOT be using again nor urge anyone else to buy this product!

These are very good value, both in terms of their function as sky lanterns(called Wishing light here) and also trying to understand the written instructions. These are translated from another language presumably Chinese) but are largely incomprehensible e.g.notice No.3. 'Wishing light are on the rise, that of the flying, cannot the long time not put, and the Flight not to be append the foreign body' or the poetic operating instruction No.4.'Wishing light rose slowly the sky, do not forget Wishing oh..........'. There are drawings which show how to use the 'Wishing light'. We had a lot of fun with them despite the first initially drifting & settling in the neighbours' garden before ascending into the night sky.
