Wanted to buy this book when it first came out a long time ago but for whatever reason didnot. The traditional patterns have stood the test of time well and are worthy of knitting again just as they are or using them as a basis for your own adaptation.. Particularly love the fair isle. as you can play around with endless variations and colourways. Am a very happy bunny to have bought this book at last!

I do not understand the praise of this book. I was very irritated and disappointed with this Book. And I had really been looking forward to this book because of all the praise for it.

First of all, I only got it, because I thought it was a book about Fair Isle knitting, as the illustration on the cover suggests.
Had I wanted a book that was mainly about Gansey, Aran and Shetland Lace knitting, which I did not look for or want, I would have gone for a book about that.

The few pages covering Fair Isle knitting, gives very small and insufficient examples of Fair Isle pattern diagrams, and frankly i do not like the colors this author has chosen.
Only a few are appealing to to me. The front cover shows the best examples and they are good tasters for what is not to come.
The rest of the book shows very dull colors and lots of brown and beige - Or to bright and "noisy" and therefore the book is not pleasing to the eye.

The writing is very small, which makes it hard to follow the patterns. And the few diagrams for Fair Isle are to small and lacks counting numbers from 1 to the end. This makes it almost impossible to use these patterns, because they are to small to follow with ease from the book.
This means I will not use this book. Others who have more experience, may recoqnize what they already know, and use it for that reason alone.

All the Gansey sweaters have very tight necklines, which I do not like either. There is not room for a shirt. The colors for the sweaters are very uneven. They are either very drap with lots of brown and dead colors, which is not apealing. Or they are too bright.
I have seen so much better in other books, so I will recommend anything but this book for that reason alone.

Aran and Gansey sweaters lacks diagrams all together. Which means you have to be glued to the book, with the smal hard to read patterns.

The one color Gansey's are also chosen in the most drap colors imaginable, or they are to bright. Some of the Aran Sweaters are beautiful, with popcorn patterns and cables in the oatmeal or ivory, and if you just want all you can lay your hands on, of old patterns, you have good eyes and are used to knit. Go for it by all means. But this is not a beginners book or very easy to follow.

Fair Isle knitting is difficult as it is, and it is so easy to get out of a pattern, and knit a stitch wrong, even when the diagram is big and clear. This make it even harder to knit Fair Isle, cable or difficult patterns.

Very pleased with the condition of this book, I wasn't expecting the quality for such a low price. It will certainly make me look at your books again!
