Great book, great value for money!

Okay, let me begin by saying that I am not an expert on Scottish fiddling, so I can't really give this book a very in-depth review, but all I can say is that I was very impressed with my purchase!

The book is packed with tunes, around 220 and comes with a CD which has 68 of the tunes that are in the book. What I enjoy about the book is that it goes through fiddling styles from all over Scotland and gives a background of each style. It also gives a brief overview of the tune and the history behind it. Some of the songs are extremely creative and even humorous. My fiddling has improved a lot from playing the tunes in this book.

A very comprehensive and highly recommended book!

I havered between giving this 4 and 5 stars because it slips very slightly into a depression between being a workbook and being a reference book - but the level of scholarship and the clarity of the descriptions of the styles is really remarkable and I went for the 5. The CD is very good as well. Well worth the money!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book 25 Jan 2013

Really pleased with this book, I'd definitely recommend it. I was looking for a book that would supplement my fiddle lessons, and this is excellent for that. I've not had the chance to sit down & go through it properly yet, but at 1st glance, there's a lot of really useful information in it about the regional syles, bowing types etc, and examples to practice. It contains a LOT of tunes! Looking forward to getting the time to get stuck right in about this book and get learning!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book for any fiddler 2 Jun 2011
By Chris - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book is great. I have been playing from it for about 5 years, and while I have included more books in my collection, I find myself using this more often than any other. It includes details such as bowing techniques, regional variations of play and so on as a great introduction to the nuances of scottish fiddle that make it so unique and infectious, and the extra information gives you more than sheet music alone can do. 3 of the tunes I used in Scottish Fiddling competitions this year were included in this book. I would recommend this for anyone interested in Scottish Fiddle, as well as those interested in American, Canadian, Irish, etc - there is much to be gained from making this part of your collection, and is certainly the book to get if you are just getting into Scottish fiddling.

I ordered this for my son, who is an intermediate level violin player. He'd never played Scottish music before. He used this book to learn. He found the tips and instructions very helpful.

Full of great Scottish fiddle tunes, with very clear instructions on how to play them - and a nifty CD with someone demonstrating the way they're supposed to sound!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good book - needs improving 10 Dec 2013

Lot's of tunes, sadly, not all of them made it onto the CD. Disappointing. Would have loved to have had all the tunes with the faster ones at two tempos. All music books should be 8 1/2 by 11 and spiral bound. This one is neither. I had to spend another 4 bucks to get it spiral bound so it would be readable on the music stand. Aggravating. This book has been purchased by myself and several of my students. A good idea poorly executed. I would like to see it improved.
