From historic half-timbered pubs opened in the 1600s, to button shops, tea merchants, hatters, and toyshops from the Georgian and Victorian periods and chic specialty shops opened in the twenty-first century, the establishments profiled in The Traditional Shops & Restaurants of London embody the city's spirit and embrace its history and strong sense of tradition. The revised guide profiles and updates the descriptions, directions, website addresses, and phone numbers of:

- more than 75 businesses including booksellers, home furnishing stores, clothiers, perfumers, umbrella shops, cheesemongers, and gourmet shops;

- more than 40 places to eat and drink, including fine restaurants, cafes, pubs, and the best places for eel, pie and mash and fish-and-chips

- the top historic street markets for food, antiques, bric-a-brac, and vintage clothes

And - a boon for armchair shoppers-the address, phone, tube stop, opening hours for each establishment, and websites for online shopping are included

Review

While it's easy to feel that every high street has been colonised by the same chain stores, a newcomer has arrived from across the Atlantic to remind us what we still have. Now living in London, Eugenia Bell has picked out more than a hundred shops, restaurnats, pubs and cafes for Londoners to take pride in. (Lonely Planet )

Filled with charming descriptions and images of old British establishments, from markets ad button emporiums to original pubs. (Ultratravel )

5.0 out of 5 stars Shops and restaurants of London 25 Oct 2008
By Carol Chernega - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I'd visited London a dozen times before buying this book -- and I still found lots of new places to visit. The book groups stores and restaurants into chapters such as "Coffee Roasters and Tea Merchants" and "Purveyors of Specialty Foods" as well as more obscure categories such as "Umbrella Shops" (well, after all, this is London!)
Each shop or restaurant has a page or two devoted to it, itemizing the address, phone number, website, nearest Tube stop, and hours of operation. There's also a brief history of each store as well as the best things to buy there (or order there, in the case of the restaurants and pubs.)
The book ends with a quick roundup of the best street markets in London.
This is a book for the discerning Anglophile. Its small size makes it easy to tuck into your carry-on bag.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well Worth It 7 May 2009
By Mr. Photo Dude - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is well worth the Amazon price. I was a little skeptical of it, but it turned out to be of good quality.

The pages are small, but the book is thick. It is too thick to be able to leave open, even for a moment, so you will need a bookmark handy.

I'm sure some of the information could be found googling, but it would take too long to do the work yourself. The book is efficient.

The photographs are of a good quality. They keep me engaged and give me a sense of many of the businesses. The photographs are better than books of a similar style.

I might not travel to London with the book. I am making my own list from the book of sites to see when I am there, and this is because of the weight.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Traditional Shops & Restaurants of London: A Guide to Century-Old Establishments and New Classics 8 April 2010
By R. Hess - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
A great guide to London. I used it more for shopping than eating. I used it maily for finding traditional men's wear and shaving accessories. The postal codes included with each entry greatly helped finding each establishment in this HUGE city. All were easily reached via the Underground.
The only negative thing about the book is it caused me to spend way too much money and resulted in much heavier baggage for the return trip.
