By Stuart
Format:Paperback
There are 6 chapters in this book apart from the introduction and conclusion. The chapters are training, distance and leverage. Knife skills. Staff Weapons. Spear and Naginata. Kusari Gama Kyoketsu Shoge. Ninja Sword. Each section starts with the author discussing tactics of how weapons of this type are used and the era from which they came and for exmaple the diffrences of where to strike if a person was wearming armour or not like in olden day Japan etc.. The author explains very well that its often circumstaces that dictate which is the best weapon as well as times we live in. Each weapon has its own introduction at the start of every chapter and the nature of how each weapon is effective or ineffective in different enviroments is discussed.

The author is or was a yondan at the time of the book being published a yondan in Bujinkan Ninpo taijutsu and received his instructors menkyo from Dr Masaaki Hatsumi.

The book in each chapter show many photographs examining diffrent defenses with all the weapons covered in the book. I have to say It makes more comfortable easier reading after having taken part in severeal ninjtusu classes and then coming back to the book a few times. I bought this book before I started ninjutsu classes and I think I might recommend this book to people fairly serious about the art more than a big introduction on all aspects of Ninjutsu or as its called more commonly called now - Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu or Bujinkan Ninpo Taijutsu.

So if your in the art its a good book to buy and I am not going to give it 4 stars becuase I dont see the point, it simply covers the main maojor weapons of the art and shows various techniques. It lives up well to the title of the book.

However I would not recommend it that much for an overview of ninjutsu as thats not what the book is trying to do.

Maybe the best book for that would be Ninjutsu History and Tradition as its written buy the lineage head of Ninjutsu in the world Masaaki Hatsumi.

A final thing to say is you will never learn any martial art from a book. Becuase there is no teacher to trust when looking just from a printed book you need to see the people in person who know and who can show you what to do. However after some classes this book can give you insight into effective techniques and if you were really obssesed maybe with a lot of practise you could learn the tecniques but you need to keep being taught. If your open to joining a martial arts club I highly recommend you try it as you can enjoy it more than just watching or reading and youll feel the diffrence if you find a good teacher. Thanks for reading the review. The book is 150 pages and there is are plenty of photos for each weapon covered.

Cheesy, like Velveeta! 8 Dec 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
What I was looking for was a summary of traditional weapons historically by Japanese warriors- you know, like these are the types of weapons, they were used by this group of people, during this era, ect. Instead, what arrived in the mail was a rather tabloid-y book with a loud cover of some Hollywood "Ninjas" in fighter stance and the banner "secrets revealed!" streaming across the top. The inside consisted of a bunch of fuzzy photographs obviously taken in someone's backyard of a couple of ordinary looking white guys play fighting. This is the bulk of the book. Few words, and fuzzy photographs. If I picked this off of a shelf in a conventional bookstore, I never would have bought it. The few paragraphs worth of information it does give in the entire book are interesting (and are the reason I'll give this book two stars as opposed to the one star I really think it's worth), but sadly not enough to make the purchase of this book worthwhile. Choose a different title. You'll be happier.

He could do better! 9 Sep 1999
By Grant Meredith - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is a very interesting book about the Japanese Ninja but it is also not a very good book. The photos are blurry at the best of times making instruction hard to follow. Also some of the topics covered are scantly reviewed. But the good point is that there is a lot of interesting reading here and for traditional ninjutsu fans it would be a good buy. Everybody else avoid it. This was one of the first books that I ever bought at a very tender age of 10. At the time I was going through Ninja madness. A martial artist of Charles Daniel's ability and knowledge can do better.

charles daniels has always been the "underdog" of th bujinkan he got his rank back when it meant something and then stopped and pursued other warroir intrests..very good book very straight forward...good book on bujinkan style ninjutsu weapons...i only have 2 problems...1 yes the photos are a little dark but this publisher unique whever thats just how they have done ALL there ninjutsu titles cant blame mr daniels really...
