More About the Author

Food and cooking play an important part in our family which likes to entertain whenever possible. Everyone enjoys Julia's cooking and the desire to write a book of traditional Cypriot cooking in particular, and Greek in general, goes back many years. With Xenia's help this has now become a reality. Julia currently lives in Chigwell, Essex.

Julia was born in the small village of Vokolida in the Famagusta district of Cyprus. Her family was very popular not only in the village but also in the surrounding area and were noted for their friendliness and hospitality. Her father, a farmer, enjoyed and was good at hunting and shooting game whilst her mother was an excellent cook whose advice was often sought at any event where cooking was a major feature. They were famous for their smoked sausages and cured pork. Many of their recipes were passed down from generation to generation and are included in this book. The family tradition and interest in cooking continued when Julia married George, a successful restaurant Owner. They owned the famous Venus restaurant in Bethnal Green, London.

5.0 out of 5 stars Food like mama used to make. 8 Dec 2010
I bought this book for my english fiance (yes I am greek cypriot) as she wanted to learn how to cook the stuff she had tried on our holiday to Cyprus this year, and that my mum here in the UK makes for us every sunday. It is well thought out, pictures are great and the majority of the recipes are easy to follow and taste really authentically Cypriot (I'm not so sure about the Lamb brain soup though)I highly recommend this book to anyone as there is a distinct lack of Cypriot cookery books on the market, there are many Greek cookbooks but the flavours are so different and more intense than the Greece greek recipes.
Who knows, I may even write a Cypriot Cookbook myself, drawing on the wealth of knowledge gained over the years from my mum and aunts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Where have you been all my life! 24 Feb 2013
By Andy
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I bought this book years ago but I no longer had it. I tried looking for it for AGES but it was out of print; a google search found loads that were used but were asking ridiculous prices as it was an out of print book. I couldn't believe my luck when I found it brand new and at a bargain price. Thank you so much Julia Chrysanthou for reprinting this again.

If you ever loved Greek (cypriot) food this book is everything you could ask for. It has everything you could possibly imagine plus more. The instructions are clear and concise, the photos are lovely and the recipes are out of this world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like my mother's cooking 12 Mar 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I borrowed a copy of this book when I wanted to bake some Greek pastries. After trying some other recipes I just had to have my own copy as otherwise the borrowed copy would not have been returned! Delivery was prompt and while I am no master chef every dish that I've cooked has been a great success. The book is well presented with a well thought out layout and photographs of many of the dishes. I really like the alternatives to some of the dishes, a good idea which can give the reader some fresh ideas. As an Anglo-Cypriot I love this book and I can now cook almost like my mother used to do.

5.0 out of 5 stars old favourites and new 22 May 2014
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This book has brought back many memories of dishes my mother used to cook. Its not easy finding good cypriot cook books but this is just what I was looking for. It has many of the dishes I grew up with and many of which I have yet to try. Cypriot food I find very comforting and always reminds me of being back in Cyprus. Its easy, simple food and also much underrated in my biased opinion. If your new to cypriot food or wanting to try it for the first time, this book is for you. Buy it. You won't be disappointed.
