I am grateful for the review on Amazon of my book from the Highland Cattle Society, though the comment about the cover pic /Traditional Herefords, rather misses the point, and needs to be addressed.
The cow and calf pictured on the front cover are more relevant than a highly polished show cow that has had the best of everything. Its not meant to be a 'coffee table' book. She (Westlake Julia) is in her working clothes, in the middle of winter, no grass, not housed. She was produced by the use of 40 year old frozen semen from an historic bull , and has bred like clockwork throughout her life. ALL her calves are breeders, including bulls, none have gone for meat use. From early Spring she rapidly takes on show condition , just off grass. I owe her far more than a front cover.
It would have been all too easy to have used a show pic,of which there are several in the book, and I knew I risked criticism. There is also a bull featured within, that does not look brilliant in show terms,I make no apology, his calves were and are nothing short of fantastic, I'm sure other Traditional Hereford breeders don't like him, to look at, but in the fullness of time I'm certain beyond doubt his influence on this special rare section of the breed will be significant. The man who encouraged me to use him knew far more than most and the whole exercise was part of a conservation programme.I want people with limited facilities and resources, and possibly no interest whatsoever in showing,to take the plunge and keep 'proper' cattle, and participate in the conservation aspect of the 'once great' breeds. It is an animals inbuilt genetic potential that matters most, not how it looks on any particular day or in a single photograph, the Rare and Traditional breeds have generations of potential fixed in their genes from decades of intelligent selection. The beginner and diversifier alike can benefit greatly from them. Each to his own I say, and the novice or even more experienced breeder should plough their own furrow, retain their humility and not worry about what other people think,I have not met anybody in the business yet that knows it all.
